Eagles, hands down (but thumbs up)!

The reasons are:
1. Most registered sets (181)
2. Popular obverse design
3. Pure silver
4. Relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain

SAEs for the reasons that dollardude said plus the fact that you can get proofs by themselves (don't have to get a whole set and then take out what you want) and they are larger than the other coins....that makes them cool.

Then, I would probably say Ikes.....since they are a completed series, and not a ton of them at that (I bought a dansco full and now need to work on some raw upgrades). Again, I like the size of them (which is probably why I started with SAEs and morgans.....silver look and size make or a cool coin).

It depends on you and what you're looking for.

If you're looking for a great looking collection that's something of a challenge to complete
but very inexpensive then gem Roosies make a great set. Most of the clads are available
for less than $1 and none should cost more than five or six dollars.

If you're looking for a fun set to work on in very high grade that could get pricey then the
zinc Lincolns might be perfect for you. These are usually almost common in very high grade
so are fairly available.

If you must have a stunning looking set cheaply then any of the proofs can be right.

If you're interested in profit potential in the short term, the Ikes look poised to wake up from
a couple year nap. These coins are not widely available raw anymore so the next run-up is
will not be slowed as much by increasing supply. These can be fun too, but raw examples
are getting decidely tough to find in nice grades.

If money is no object but you want to collect something that you can recoup your money in
and have some fun in the mean time then any of the top grade clads or nickels in unc.

For the most fun for the least money try to assemble a set of clad quarters from circulation.
This set will run less than $20 and will contain some really tough coins. Add the varieties too,
so you get to keep finding coins you didn't have at all rather than merely upgrades.

High grade proofs should be a blast for the right individual. Commems will get you out of the
house and searching for some great coins.

Modern world coins should not be ignored either. If these interest you then they can make a
fantastic collection also. Many of these have been even more ignored than their US counterparts
and have suffered even greater attrition. In a few cases the coins weren't saved in unc and then
the entire circulating population was melted for the metal!

It really doesn't matter what you collect as long as your having fun or it's fullfilling your needs.

That is a tough question. It would be a close call, but I would choose Commems 1986-2003. This set is on going and is much harder to complete than you can imagine.

The best modern set is the one that turns you on.

That would be Proof Jefferson Nickels for me. It is impossible to complete the set with all coins Deep Cameo so it is challenging. I like the metal. Sometimes nickel tones nicely so one could put together a set of toned proof Jeffs.

MS Jeffs are a longer series that is almost impossible to complete in Full Steps. Nickels don't grade as high as the other coins, there are much fewer coins in the super high grades.

Personally, I like two sets on the list. I really like the design of the ASE. Collecting both a set of uncirculated ASE, and Proof ASE's. These are great looking coins, especially the Proof's. And not too expensive to put together. I also like Franklin's. Going for a common MS64FBL grade is a good challenge, particular in th earlier coins.

"best" is such a subjective word.

But my overall favorite on your list is the Franklins, followed by the silver Washingtons, followed by the IKES.

But my personal choice would be for a Type Set of one of each, plus the SLQ, WLH, IHC, Buffalo nickel, 4 Barber coins, etc.

I guess I'm supposed to say why I think it's the modern gold commems. The reason: Some interesting designs and lower mintages that make them desirable as type coins and not just as grade rarities. They also have considerable intrinsic value.

Ikes -- last of the big dollars, just long enough to be interesting without being overwhelming, great variety of types within the series including various metals, strikes, and design changes. Easy to complete in typical condition with unlimited challenge to complete in high-grade or with beautiful toning. Ya gotta likes Ikes.

I dont collect moderns, but I agree with cladking on the Ikes. I think they are way underpriced and more difficult to find in true "certifiable"(PCGS) gem 65 an higher than people think. If something ever wakes up this set, its going to be get on board or get out of the way!!

I am still partially undecided on my feelings on how the new nickel redesign will affect the jefferson's. I think it may have some help igniting intrest, but not to the extent that the washington quarter redesign did.
