Oh, good God. I can believe that these designs were actually chosen. This has to be the worst year yet.

The Wisconsin quarter is worse than bad...it's ridiculous!

I hate to be so negative, but I think these quarters have been a real disappointment.

Looks like the designs are moving from mediocrity towards out-and-out crap.

Michigan had no alternative suggestions except the state outline and motto (SOAM).
Florida ends up with no state outline, but three isolated objects.
Texas is a SOAM
Iowa has no state outline, but is quite bland
Wisconsin steals Iowa's rejected cow theme. Too bad they didn't have room for the unofficial motto "Eat Cheese or Die".

It really seems like the designs are going downhill. I still can't get over the Missouri fiasco, the original design was sooo much better than the mint's re-design. I am from Michigan, and our state Q is probably the most boring design yet. The good news is that if I ever have to show someone "where" a city in Michigan is....I won't have to hold up my hand anymore. i can just pull out the quarter!

I can't believe that the designs are actually getting worse!

CW online has the California designs, my home state, and most are awful. The Golden Gate bridge design has a palm tree that sticks out like a sore thumb. The prospector design shows the top of his hat in a very weird angle. The only one I like is the contemporary design of the sun and waves, which the mint of course will never select because it doesn't have at least 15 different images on it and/or trees that look like brocolli.

What a design disappoint this whole program has been!

I must agree. I'm a Michigan native myself, born in Detroit, went to high school in Jackson, and attended MSU.

Of all the SQ designs, I have to say this Michigan design is one of the most unoriginal designs in the history of state quarter programs. The outline of state and nothing else???

All the history Michigan has and we get an outline of the state? The automobile industry? The Mackinac Bridge? The freezing cold weather?

I was a bit disappointed, as the state quarter craze is what got me interested in coins again. Glad you guys like the site. I can't really remember how I found it, but I do refer back to it every few months. Whoever the author is did some nice work.

I know. I wish the mint would get into a retro craze and strike a few years of SLQ's after the SQ program. They're only one letter apart!

I took another look at Florida's and I guess it's supposed to be a single "scene" - a boat approaching the coast with the shuttle flying overhead. But to me it looks like three separate elements (boat, coastline, shuttle) which are unrelated. There's nothing to pull the three elements together.

I thought Maine, Kentucky and New Jersey were pretty good of the ones done so far. It's really hard to believe how crappy this SQ program is turning out.

Did anyone see dcarr's letter to the editor in the new NN about the SQ selection process?

I can only imagine how God-awful a modern, low-relief clad reinterpretation of the SLQ would look!

.....Let's see (scratching head), I need to create a truly memorable design that illustrates my state's heritage, traditions and pride....hmmmm (scratching head).......pause.....I GOT IT!, let's take an OUTLINE of the state and put some badly drawn state icons over it! Yes, that will certainly make for a unique and beautiful design! Yes, an OUTLINE is definitely the way to go! Hell, look at Indiana's quarter, that's a real beauty! Maybe ours can be as good as that one!

I love the Tom McCall OR quarter in the designs. He was the Gov of OR in the 70's and wanted everyone to not come to OR for living or tourism. The signs coming into OR at the border used to read: Welcome to Oregon, we hope you enjoy your visit.

Looks like plain and boring get bonus points from the mint. They've taken a neat idea and are ruining it in midstream. I knew the concept would be wildly successful in bringing new collectors to the hobby. However, these plain boring coins will begin to sour the masses. A real shame!!

Great, we need more maps on State Quarters!

Did they really need to show the ass-end of a shuttle?

If your state can't think of anything other than a friggin map, you live in a boring state!

Is this the "Little House on the Prairie" quarter?

Cow on right, cheese on left. Is this a before and after picture? What does "FORWARD" mean?

Wisconsin...wow...a cow, cheese and corn....thats pitiful.

Wisconsin is a beautiful state, driven through it several times...no offense to the locals, but that quarter takes the lead for the worst one from Connecticut's tree as far as I'm concerned.

Yup...this State Quarters program is an overall disappointment. Some of them are great, and some are plain old bad. I'll continue to collect them all though as it's still new and fun. :-)

Just looked it up. Sounds like they went all over the place. Started in WI went to KS, then MN then Dakotas.

A check of the Mint web site says that they are looking for new artists to design coins. Maybe help is on the way...

But I guess there is no saving what has already happened.

Yeah, cant change whats been done.
There have been good designs, but for some reason, the mint is chosing the ones far from the best...i dont get it.
I dont think they need to get new designers...I think the mint needs to get a new approval board. I dont know what their process is to make the final decision, but it definately needs to be revamped.

I actually like the Iowa design. I'd say it it the best of the 2005 designs, at least.
I've made quite a few "suggestions" about state quarter designs (some good, some not so good).

In the case of MI I think the state outline is appropriate because of it's unique upper and lower penninsulas. However they should have added a car since that is that they are most famous.

Texas and Michigan are real disappointments. No imagination at all. Committee of bland. Wisconsin and Florida went the route of Chamber of Commerce hodge-podge. Iowa's cool, though.
