Practices on Buy Sell Trade..????

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just sold and confirmed a coin yesterday and today get a renege on the deal. Buyer says unforseen circumstances but I asked him not to order again as I don't consider it an acceptable practice to go back on a deal.

Was that too harsh? I have some more coins to sell over the next few weeks but really want to deal only with those who know they can buy what they order.

Opinions??

the buyer let me know it is still available even though you felt it necessary to be a wiseass with him.

I think your comments to him and on the board are pretty petty.

I've dealt with him NUMEROUS times with no problems. If he says something happened and he cannot come through then that is THE case. I for one appreciate honesty whether it is benefitting my wallet or not.

Until you group your offerings into one thread many around here (including me) won't even look.
And $8 to ship is really excessive.

You have a 7-day return policy, no? How long would shipping take each way? 3 days? So now this is 13 days. Did the buyer contact you within 13 days that something came up from the time he said he'd take it? Life happens, and sometimes there are problems. I've had a buyer pull out of a deal before, but I don't hold it against him. Unless you're in someone's shoes, you can't be sure exactly what situation they're in...

ASKING for opinions is a whining crybaby?

How is asking someone who cancels his first deal not to order more coins being a wiseass?

Was the buyer IDENTIFIED publicly? Now that would be whining and unprofessional.

And what kind of GROUPING do you guys want? I separated them to be able to identify the sold ones and not bother people with endless "ttt's" for the remainder. Also a response to an earlier question some time back indicated that MOST like a picture in the post instead of a link.

This type of stuff is not accepted in any venue and threats to hold breath or never buy ANYTHING EVER EVER ALLY ALLY ALLS IN FREE doesn't exactly square with my idea of any professionalism whatsoever.

How do you buy stocks, cars, homes, etc?

A person's WORD is his BOND. Once given it is an obligation. I have a standing offer of $100,000 to ANYONE who can find ONE reneged coin deal in my history.

Things CAN come up. Of COURSE they can. "Arrangements" can be made. Arrangements are NOT unilateral. They are negotiated.

And this is NOT a tough crowd. SOME of it is as SOFT as mush (and with an equal sense of responsiblity)

8 bucks ship too much? OK.....what's fair? I can accomodate anything.

Except an immature group of people who seem unable to understand a request for an OPINION.

It's not- you're within your rights, there. But it is a bit harsh, perhaps. "Unforseen circumstances" can and do arise from time to time, and the folks who are understanding about it are more likely to create goodwill (in other words, repeat business).

it is not a wise ass to ask not to buy from again

BUT - even though he may have backed out of a $100 coin, in a month or 2 they may have bought a $1000 coin - but not now, because they think you are a jerk (oops, I mean you said not to buy from you again).

I guess I fail to see your reasoning or logic to get SO pissed off over something so trivial. It's a 200.00 coin.

I took your comments on the other board as somewhat of an attempt to smack him for backing out.

The guy had something come up. SO WHAT. At least he didn't keep telling you for the next 3 months "check is in the mail" or some other excuse. He immediately notified you that he couldn't do it. I guess he could have had you ship it and then immediately returned it and then you'd be happy?

as far as groupings.......people prefer people that list things on the board to have them all in one thread if at all possible. Not my rule. Kind of a courtesy rule because there is so much activity over there and posts drop at a fast enough rate with people posting several items in separate threads.

$8 may not be too much to ship depending on how you ship. If that is Registered then no??? now if that is in a bubble mailer and insured for 200.00 then yes 8.00 is too much to ship at least in my opinion.

You asked for opinions and that's what you got. I fail to see how anyone's opinion here (Including yours) is immature.

Okay, the consensus seems to be running to "too harsh."

    That's all I asked.

But a "first deal" gone sour makes me question the concept of "future business."

Now call me a wiseass, but I don't WANT future cancellations. My reply was to discourage those who may NOT complete the purchase to just simply refrain from MY offers.

It in NO way was intended to drive off buyers for my stuff. IF....this had been a repeat customer, I would have OF COURSE been more accomodating as we would have established a history that we would both be familiar with.

In a way, this should serve as a caution to all who think coins are an "investment" or at least discourage all but the brave (or masochistic) from attempting to make it a life work.

I did and very successfully. I am just now selling off some stuff that age and life situation dictate should be placed in other hands.

If that be treason, hang me.

    ...aaaaaackkkkk....

Darn, Lucy.....gonna miss ya. Specially when all them roll sets of toned Frankies hit. (That 49-S roll from the old janitor at the SF mint is SPECTACULAR....may not offer as he may still get fired for liftin it)

    heh

It is perfectly OKAY with me if you never order from me. Okay?

phooey.....all this brouhaha an now I gotta mark the coin SOLD again. dang.

NOW.................DO you want BST stuff all grouped even though it will be repeatedly brought to the top by a crybaby seller who won't give up until the last coin is gone? It'll mean LINKS instead of images.

Whatta life. Makes ya kinda wonder if the Japanese asked for an "opinion" on Hiroshima.

Therein lies a problem. No one wants cancellations... in business, everyone hopes the other party is satisfied and wants things to be smooth. Just because someone gets an unexpected bill one month doesn't mean they can never pay for an item. I will always do my best to keep my end of a deal, but I can't 100% guarantee a transaction to work, simply because life doesn't always deal me, you, or anyone a good hand.

    topstuff,
IMO you may have been to harsh with the buyer. Yes, things do happen. An example: during the first of the year I inquired about a Franklin Lucy had for sale. The coin arrived and was all she said it was. Than, bam, my father-in-law dies and has little insurance and my wife and I have to fork out $10,000 in funeral costs. I advised Lucy and returned the coin. With complete understanding Lucy accepted the return with a gracious attitude.
Perhaps your buyer had similar problems and did not share them. Either way, take the high road. Unless this buyer has done the same before it's better to forgive than to hold a grudge.
    Just my opinion.

If a person orders something from me and needs to back out, I understand, things happen. I'd say you are being to harsh, but that is your right.

I would not charge $8 for shipping unless you are sending the item registered. Many times I do not charge Forum members any shipping at all and when I do I keep it as small an amount as I can.

In my perfect little world, the BST would be a friendly place for collectors to come and deal their material. While profit is always on everybody's mind, the BST should not be the place for folks to try and make their killing.

As a buyer, I've made some pretty sweet deals on the BST here and across the street and have dealt with some great folks. With the prices I've paid, I don't imagine the sellers made much unless they stole them in the first place image
I'm currently working a deal in selling my first item on the BST...after the haggling and what not, I may make enough profit to buy a beer...but I'm getting cash back on something I didn't really need, and somebody is getting (IMO) a very nice coin at a good price.
There are other venues for folks who are out to make profit....
And by golly...if you've got a link to an ebay auction in your BST post...say so in the subject line image

HAH! Lucy is hooked again. I may add some lizard tails to my dinner cauldron tonight.

One thing is for sure. I am NOT gonna eat ANY kids for at least a week.

I have retracted my restriction on the buyer.

It was just the FIRST DEAL and maybe an overreaction by me.

Anyhow the coin is sold again. Sometimes my DEALER mentality forgets the COLLECTOR one and the whole shebang goes cattywumpus.

FAR more productive for all to clear the air rather than to sulk or whine or threaten.

Starting over from scratch is easier than a "lock and load"...........although I've done both.

I'd rather someone immediately say that they had a problem than to
have them wait and use a return privilage to send back a coin later.

Unless someone has a history of aborted sales, give the guy the
benefit of the doubt. I've aborted on one purchase; that was earlier
this year when Hurricance Isabelle decided that my house would look
better with a hole in the roof and water in the loft and one of the
downstairs bedrooms. You know, I don't think that should blacklist
me from the BST board. (And the seller was very understanding)

Unfortunately you won't have the opportunity to have repeat customers if you treat first time customers in this manner. Perhaps being nicer on the first transaction will result in additional purchases.

I personally don't have a problem with listing the coins one or two at a time. What bothers me with the BST is when it's used as a perpetual free want ad by bringing posts to the top daily for weeks.

tolet you know it was a bit harsh. im only 20 and yea stuff happens. i went to buy a coin and had to tell the seller i couldnt cause i had to buy a radiator for my monte ss. did he get mad because i had to back out of a $350 deal. not really if anything he respected me more cause i had the guts to tell him and not whine and prolong it. now he is willing to look for coins for me and willing to do more cause im honest and it was the only time i was not able to make the deal complete.

Update: I asked your opinions and from them have tendered an apology to the buyer with an invitation to buy again if he so chooses.

The scenario on this coin is the one from hell. After listing, I had immediate buyers. The FIRST one (by time of PM) was naturally the FIRST one I considered. His reply was that he wanted to either trade or sell a few coins first. I told him (courteously, I think) that I would rather take offer #2 which was immediate cash. And THAT was the one that had the problem.

I would like to ask a little slack as this is MY first soujourn into selling directly to COLLECTORS rather than DEALERS. And it is obviously a different situation. Not WORSE......just DIFFERENT.

    So I adjust my policy.

I don't play games. When I ask for opinions, I want opinions. I won't whine and I will do my best to understand differing points of view.

You should know that I have had games played with ME by the best in the business. An order for 50 Krugerrands from one of the highest end dealers on the show circuit AND ebay AND coinnet created the longest fight I have ever had to collect funds. HE is not able to buy from me again.

    I digress.

IF you choose to buy any of my stuff, all I ask is that you read the "sell" msg and communicate freely.
    I will with you.
Your NAME will NEVER be divulged to ANYONE under ANY circumstance ......other than a fraud such as a stopped check or any sort of scam.
I am not able to deal with large batches just due to the work involved in running, managing, packing, shipping, etc. that dictates that I sell .....about.....5 coins max at a time.

I am retired now and I......may...... put some coins on ebay again, but I really don't know.

The ones I offered on here were marked NOT ON EBAY so there was no link.

I no longer have a Paypal acct so I need money orders or checks. MAYBE trades but probably not.

(interesting lawsuit in today's paper against ebay by AT&T over Paypal) Looks like Paypal sold JUST in time.

Anyhow, that's my side of it and I thank all who participated in the "opinion" roast.

DISCUSSION is the gateway to understanding. I'll discuss anything with anybody.

FIGHTS are silly (except when I put some people in gorilla suits out of my shop at the point of a Beretta...but that's ANOTHER story)
