Rarity of 1972P Type 1 and Type 2 Ikes, PCGS Pops?

I noticed the 1972P type 1 and type 2 Ike pcgs pops are running about the same, is it possible that the type 1 is more rare than previously thought?

Since the very recent decision by PCGS to differentiate between the
three reverse types of 1972, my opinion is based on only
    preliminary study.

I think that the T-2 will always be scarcer than the T-1 in grades up
to MS-65. Type 1 72-P Ikes are readily available in BU grades of
MS-63/less. MS-64 T-1 coins are obviously collectible AT THIS TIME
as the current PCGS population remains relatively static. However,
since past submitters of 72-P Ikes were not gunning for the MS-64
grade many nice coins with obvious MS-65-denying impairments were
simply not sent in for grading. A percentage of these had to be of
the T-1 variety. Therefore, now that T-1's are collectible in mint
state grades, I expect the populations of these to increase in MS-64 AND MS-65 and, at a HIGHER RATE than similar graded T-2's.

Regarding the MS-66/better issue, currently PCGS has graded just one
T-1 and two T-2 in MS-66 (none higher.) I still have to think T-2 will
ultimately prove to be scarcer since its original mintage is miniscule
and many more-fold T-1 exist in BU. Still, either coin in MS-66 (even
the T-3) is a real modern numismatic prize for the advanced Ike
    Dollar collector.

Speaking of MS65 and MS66 coins.

    As of 11/18/2003, PCGS certified
    1972-P type I, 20 MS65 and 1 MS66
    1972-P type II, 5 MS65 and 2 MS66
    1972-P type III, 208 MS65 and 7 MS66

Prior to the three types were certified, PCGS made
    223 MS65 and 9 MS66 (2 type two and 7 type three)

As you could see that 1 MS66 (type one) and 10 MS65 (I am pretty sure that at least two were type one) were made in the last six months. New MS65 or better coins pop are still increasing. Nevertheless, I am surprise that currently the type II MS65 pop is only 5. I know more than 5 existed in PCGS holders. Some of them must not do the designate review image

I submitted a relatively big hoard of the Type 2 that probably was enough to skew the pop numbers for a while, I wouldn't analyze them too much until a year or two has passed.

I think cupronik has it about right, except I would give even money on the Ty1 vs Ty2 in true MS66. Certainly the Ty2 are far fewer to be found, but they are usually found relatively nice (for Ikes) compared to the Ty1 which are generally hideous.

    hey Tad

so what you're saying is that Type 1-2-3 aside, any 1972-P Ike in gem grade is worth picking up raw, correct?? i'm always on the lookout.

I was thinking of asking this question myself. This info is much appreciated. I also think that the Type 2 is a bit more rare.

I bought a Type 2 PCGS MS63 for $100 a couple of months ago, not knowing if this was a good price or not. Since then, I think the price has appreciated substantially. I got lucky, I guess.

BTW, if anyone has a Type 1 in PCGS MS63/64, please PM me!

keets, yep any gem 1972-P is a good score. It's the key gem date even if you combine the population of all three types.

Nice MS64s bring something of a premium too because the gems are expensive. And of course any grade Type 2.
