Ebay-Sniping

Hi,

I understand EBay is going to change the sign-in procedure for security reasons. Iimagine this will break
sniping tools that are not compliant and/or not licensed to use the Ebay API. Might just keep
an eye out for the change.

hopefully this will mean higher prices for sellers. I use sniping tools but think they lower the end price for coins.

Hi Russ,

From what I understand all logins will go through a central URL something like:

logins.ebay.com or signins.ebay.com

After authentication I imagine they will redirect to the normal index page. For companies that license the API
I wouldnt think this will be an issue-for others I suspect it will break their app at least temporarily. You can join the developer
program for free if you have an interest:

http://developer.ebay.com/DevProgram/

it is pretty cool really but if you wish to run lots of queries not cheap.

As part of our continuous effort to strengthen safety in the eBay marketplace, in the next few weeks we will be introducing a streamlined Sign In function. Once this feature is available, every time a member signs into eBay they will do so from a page with the same URL. The URL will appear in the member’s browser address window as: http://signin.ebay.com/.

We are making this change in an effort to better enable members to trade safely and avoid being victimized by spoof (fake) emails and fraudulent web sites that claim to be eBay. Once we make this change, members will only need to remember one URL (http://signin.ebay.com/) to determine whether they are signing into a legitimate eBay site.

Please note: This change may impact bookmark settings for some of our members. If you have bookmarked an eBay Sign In page, you may need to delete it and re-save it by using the Sign In link at the top of any eBay page once this change takes place.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of a few other critical safety tips when trading online:

Never leave eBay to complete a transaction. People who solicit buyers to go "off eBay" to complete your transaction pose a significant safety risk.
Never pay for your item with a Wire Transfer Service. These services are like sending cash to a stranger – they are an extremely unsafe way to pay.

Sniping does provide a certain amount of excitement, but when it drops the ball, some aggrivation, as well. I'd just as soon not have it, period! JMHO...

sniping is part of ebay. snipper keep the prices real. without them ebay would be some kind of bargan basement website.

I agree with JB that sniping tends to keep the prices down.

I personally don't snipe (too much) I'll bid my limit and hope it holds out which surprisingly does work.

On the other hand, my friend is strictly a sniper and doesn't even both bidding until the last few seconds and then braggs about how he stole the coin (which is bad for the buyer). If everyone waits until the last few seconds to bid the price can only increase so much especially with those who throw in .01 to beat out the dollar.

There are some coins I won't even bother knowing that snipers are lurking.

I only snipe manually also, so it wont affect me. But from a selling standpoint on better/ tougher items, I think it will help the price a bit.

I'm trusting that my robo-sniper of choice will adapt to any new login procedures. However, if it doesn't I will still snipe -- just manually. You can't get rid of me that easily....

Too many people go to eBay wanting garage sale prices and then they get mad when they lose an auction with 20 seconds left. So what? They did not bid high enough to win the item. Plain and simple. I really do not see the problem. And I have lost to snipers MANY times and I still feel this way. It's fair game for all. If you want garage sale prices, go to a garage sale.

When I really want a coin I manually snipe it, I used a snipe program but lost a few with it. As a seller it is my job to get the highest possible prices legitimatly of course as a buyer it is my job to win the auction as cheaply as possible. sniping does keep the cost down most of the time.

When do we get spell check?

People were sniping long before the tools came along. In fact, there was enough manual sniping that programmers saw an opportunity. So, I doubt this type a change would eliminate sniping.

More on point, I have to sign in to bid now and the snipe tools do that as well. How does changing the URL of the sign in page inhibit the snipe tools? Can't they just sign in on the new page and then bid as usual?
