Meteor Shower Barber Half

I purchased a few coins out of N.Y. last week for a Barber half set I am working on.
When I received the coins I found that the 1914 S had an unusual defect. The coin looks like it has a meteor shower on the right side. There are small splashes of silver in the hair
between the letters, and on the face. This is most visible in the flat part of the coin. Does anyone have an idea of what caused this?

I believe this is what is called a lamination error. Basically, layers of metal separate from the coin due to a defect in the planchet.

If they are laminations there will be cracks along the raised areas where the metal has separated.

Hard to tell from the pics, planchet lamination or striations?

I'm pretty certain it's planchet delamination.

I agree with the others, looks like a planchet lamination. If so, it's caused by improper alloy mix and/or gas bubbles during planchet stock formation.
