Where have all the 1894-S Barber Dimes gone?

Over the last few years, it seems like there have been several opportunities to purchase classic rarities, 1804 Dollars(seems like once a quarter!) 1927-D Saints, 1913 V Nickels (once or twice) 1885 Trade Dollars. But what about the dime??????

Three have sold in recent years:

Parrino sold the James A Stack specimen [PF66+, finest known] for a reported $750k a few years back
The Eliasberg coin [PF65- ] sold in a Stacks auction in 2001
David Lawrence sold an NGC PF65 [recently upgraded, but nice coin] a year or so ago.

There was a long-time local dealer who died a few years back, and when I chatted with his son (who took over the business) at the ANA Summer Seminar he mentioned that he had an 1894-S that had been in his dad's collection. Don't know if it's a fact, but it is within the realm of possibility.

I can't confirm if it was fact or fiction, but heard the circ. sold in the past year or so privately?

Hmmm - does it count as a sale if you have a signed contract but the coin is never delivered?

David Lawrence had a specimen for sale about three months back. It sold withing a few days or week of posting on his site. I think they were asking $750,000

For me that is the great paradox of collecting, true rarities can be had if one had the money, but sleeper dates that are supposedly so much more common are rarely found and cost a minute fraction of the rarites.

Try finding an original 1896-O Barber half in XF, or for that matter the 1893-S, 1901-S, 1904-O, 1901-O. the quarters have 5 or six dates just like the halves. No, give me the common date sleepers any day of the week they are harder to find.

I'll be selling an 1860-O dime in a few weeks on ebay. It's not a "classic rarity" but rather an ordinary old key date.

Thinks for the info, but man, I remember when they used to go for 150k.....only about 10/15 yrs ago.
