After hearing so many Paypal war stories, I have decided it is not worth the risk. Effective immediately, I have closed my Paypal account and will no longer accept $$ thru Paypal.

no need to close it completely. Just go and open a checking account strictly for paypal purposes and don't keep hardly any money in it.

Been on PayPal forever now..Never had any problems. I don't bid on auctions that don't accept PayPal now.....They were good to me when I got crapped out of some software. I was re-imbursed by PayPal.......

Your "smart" bushmaster8, over $1000.00 lost two years ago with countless hours trying to re-coup my money, and never being re-imbursed, I also dropped Paypal. To anyone out there that think Paypal's so called "SECURE" website is secure, they are sadly mistakin!

Go to www.paypalwarning.com and then click on the "Wall of Shame" and you can take it to the bank that those are "real" stories!

If people interested in your auction want it bad enough they will bid. If they don't bid they probably wouldn't have ben the high bidder anyway!

What happened on PayPal. I have been using it forever and never had problems. They even recovered funds from one auction I won and the seller was not legit. I have heard of many horror stories, but have never heard any from a personal acquaintance. I always withdraw the money as soon as it hits my PP acct just to be on the safe side. I have heard stories where PP will withdraw money from my bank/cc acct if necessary. If/when that happens, I will say goodbye to PayPal.

I wonder what the percentage is of "bad" deals vs the good ones are with Paypal? Out of hundreds of thousands of transactions each month, how many turn sour? I don't know, but I suppose the answer would be revealing.

I think of Paypal as I do bowling (and, no- I'm not much of a bowler): If I dropped a bowling ball on my foot a couple of times I might want to walk (limp?) away from the lanes swearing off bowling for good. I might even tell others of the dangers of bowling and post my horror story on a website aimed at warning others of the hazard of bowling. I could even blame the ball falling on my foot due to the weight of the ball and the gravity in the room. Who knows? Maybe the ugliness of the rented bowling shoes distracted me and caused me to drop the ball.

I might even be right with any of the above, but would or should that stop others from bowling?

In my case it was just as above.... My "bank account" was accessed through "Paypals" so-called secure sight nad I was relieved of the $1000.00... If this should ever happen to you don't count on thinking you will be able to talk to a "real" human being!!! You will only get "form lettters" e-mailed to you to fill out, and get notorized, and police reports have to be made, etcetera, etcetera, and then you will still be out the time and money! After "two" years I finally gave up!!!

Paypal sucks. Closed my acct. Most "pp ONLY" customers are a PITA.

Besides, the new POST OFFICE online pay thing is only a buck a pop.

Once you get verified and all the other BS that paypal requires, you mean to tell me that they (paypal) are at liberty to access your/my account and relieve you of funds w/o first consulting you/me? Was your situation from a tranaction on ebay? I'd need more specifics before contemplating dumping paypal. Thus far, it's been okay until I decided to become a premier member(which sucks by the way)....

I guess I have used PayPal in a reverse psychology sense. I often bid on auctions that DO NOT accept PayPal because I get a much better deal. I am willing to write a check or get a money order and mail it to save HUGE amounts.

I have mixed feelings about PayPal. Although I have used them for three years now with no problems, their fees are so excessive that I'm wondering if it is worth it. In my experience, people who charge high fees and who run a business that is very expensive compared to the norm generally have problems with ethics and generally do not do a good job running their business. I am leaning towards not doing business with PayPal at all based on their excessive fees. Since eBay bought them out about a year ago, nothing has solved this problem, and nothing has changed.

I agree with most of this thread. Paypal gives me the willies! I think they just have too much latitude in accessing your personal funds at their discretion. I completed one transaction with them and the whole process made me feel very vulnerable. I'm just not interested in completing transactions with anyone who does not accept CC over the phone or personal check.

I was permanently banned from PayPal last year and all of my PayPal funds seized.
I got ripped off on eBay for a $150 camcorder and because I waited 31 days to tell PayPal they told me I was out of luck (the user agreement says you have to notify them within 30 days for a claim).

Since I used my credit card on this transaction, I reported it to my credit card company and asked them to do a charge back, which got PayPal all upset.

After a couple of weeks, they came around to my way of thinking and re-instated my permanently banned account and released the funds (about $500)

With any fraud, their policy is to freeze first and investigate later (much later in most cases).

Since then I’ve paid about $800 in PayPal fees, but I still don’t trust them.

I get charged 2.9% on EVERY PayPal transaction regardless if it’s funded by a balance, instant transfer or credit card.

I do use their MasterMoneyCard to charge against my balance and get a 1.5% kickback, but plan on downgrading my account back to free (you can do it once in a lifetime) once the damn Mint sends me my Salmon medal that has been on backorder since August which I used my PayPal MC to pay with.

Yes, they are. It's written right in to the TOS that they can attach a bank account to recover funds. Grab first, ask questions later. This is no different than a merchant services agreement, though.

That's a funny statement - people that use Paypal won't end up as the high bidder? So I really never was the high bidder on all of the auctions that I have won? mmmmmm

I have never had one problem with Paypal, and it is far more convenient for me than going to the bank and getting a money order, or sending a personal check and waiting for it to clear. Plus, I did have a fraudulent seller once, and after a few weeks of investigation, Paypal refunded all of my money, and got the seller removed from e-bay.

"Razorface"... I swore I wouldn't explain this again, but just for you here is exactly what happened... One morning I logged on to my e-mail, and there was a message from Paypal thanking me for the recent use.... I clicked on the link to see what they were talking about, (since I had not used Paypal for over two weeks), and what had happend was that someone had "cracked" Paypals "secure" site and had retrieved my so-called "secure" "PASSWORD" and helped theirself to $1000.00 of my money by going in to my personal bank account and "transfering" the money to their "fake" account! So if you decide to continue using Paypal it's no skin off my butt. But be advised if you lose any money in your account forget about getting it back!!! What's funny I still get e-mails from Paypal wanting me to update my account, and I even got one last week telling me all "3" of my "direct deposit accounts" credit cards had expired!!!!

They don't have a clue what's going on at Paypal! Remember all of this happened almost "3" years ago, and my account is still showing "FROZEN"!!! What a joke!!!

Again go to the website www.paypalwarning.com and check out the horror stories!!! Even since Ebay bought out Paypal from the East Indians that used to own it there has been even more horror stories!

Like Russ says, if you don't like Paypal, try being a credit card merchant. Same problems, similar fees, but more stringent to get approved and ongoing monthly fees as well. It's the price you pay as a seller to reach a wider audience who appreciates the convenience.

Paypal is credit-card-merchant for the masses, and... considering they are dealing with the masses, after all.. they've had admirably few problems in my opinion.

The best thing about them is raising the awareness level of collectors-turned-sellers of some of the expenses dealers face all the time.

What was most disappointing to me with Paypal was how they slipped from free to fee. What they could have done to really advance electronic payment was to charge the BUYER all fees. That way they could give the buyer meaningful incentives to not use credit cards to fund their accounts, or to keep their money in their Paypal account, etc... and provide great incentive for all sellers to accept Paypal.

Instead they took the weasely charge-the-seller blackmail mentality that has existed forever with credit cards.

Your welcome.... Just one other thing.... It's not easy for me to go to the bank or post office either since I live 20 miles from town. But That's what I do when neccessary..... But when I do bid, and win something on Ebay my 900 positive feedbacks usually precludes having to do this, and I get the same service sending a personal check. Not to mention I have some excellent "on approval" references to give any of the sellers that I am a winning bidder on one of their auctions.

I like bidding on items that do not take paypal. Prices seem to be lower. I got a new Lange Lincoln Cent book for $10.00. I was the only bidder. it usually goes for $25.00 and up, with multiple bidders. Since my warehouse is right across the street from the Post Office, it is not inconvienent to get a money order since I ship out collector books daily. BUT, after reading this topic, I will empty my Paypal account more often. No since being stupid. JMHO. Steve

My bank offers a special online checking account service. It will only allow you to withdraw or transfer limited funds (I'm set to $25 only) without verification from me (I won't go into the details of what security they require).

I've never had a problem with paypal (paying or receiving) and I very, very rarely bid on auctions that do not accept it. If you are worried about problems accepting, maybe you should open up a second checking account and tie that one to PayPal.

If you think paypal fees are steep then try renting a store. To me it is a modest fee to be able to run a business right out of my home.
