Russ is conservative with his words, but his pictures talk ...

For coins that the mint wasn't thrilled to make for coins that collectors weren't thrilled to receive, that's a nice one. It's interesting that the coin sure doesn't appear FS--I guess this is a reflection of the mint's lack of interest and care in making the SMS coins.

I was collecting back when these coins were initially sold. It's interesting that at the time no one really gave a rat's rump whether the coin was cameo'ed or not. No one talked about them and no one publicized them. I knew that cameo proofs existed, but I had never seen one. And I had no idea that cameo'ed SMS coins existed. Personally, I think your coin is really nice looking and if I'd have seen it back in 1965 or so I would have been thrilled to buy it.

    hey Randy

probably MS65DCAM if the mirrors are bright---or can be made brighter!!---or else MS65CAM. for SMS Jefferson's, i've come to realize there are two kinds of coins worth collecting and a third kind much hoped for and seldom found. i look for -1. heavily frosted gems, -2. well struck coins with full steps and -3. the ultimate-hoped-for heavily frosted and well struck coin with good step detail and minimal planchet flaws. i'm of the opinion that the third is the product of someone's imagination!!

I have two 1965 nickels in cameo. One in 66 and one in 67. The coin in 67 is super strong. I've tried regrading it twice for dcam and it didn't work. It's stronger than the Russ coin. I have a feeling a 1965 nickel has to walk on water before it'll get the dcam grade.

    Jay,

Right now pretty much any pre 1971 proof has to walk on water to get the DCAM designation. It's almost like PCGS has reverted to the days when they didn't use it for 1950 to 1970 coins.

Nice contrast. I'd make sure to keep that one in the drawer. They're getting more difficult to find. Lately, those coins are easter eggs, and all of the hunters have donned their hats and baskets.image

After I just went 0-3 on SMS CAMs, will be parking this one for awhile ... Don't sweat it Russ, it's not like you're going to retire on what the coin sold for, nor am I headed for the poor house ... image
