Jefferson nickel error? Can anyone help?

  how does the diameter compare with other nickels?
  
  possibly retaining collar missing ?

  The size is the same as a regular nickel. When it first saw it, I just thought it was worn but when I looked at it closer this is what I found.

  Cuds along the rim and an exceedingly weak strike, looks like a die on its last legs...

  It's a spooned coin. After mint supposed error, nothing else. Someone tapped on the edges of that coin until it gave way...usually with a small hammer or a spoon.

  Hey those are good close up pictures!
  I'll go with spooned too. You can tell by the way the rim rolls back over the letters that it was done AFTER striking.

  Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
