Does this 1857-S $20 Gold coin show early signs of the aftermath of curating SS Central America Gold?

Take a look at the auction description of this coin and the pictures of this coin. Even the auctioneer admits that there are ".....subdued by a light coppery gold color starting to settle in."

Your comments, please?

    Looks pretty doggy for a 65 in the pictures. I hope those are shadows and not dark areas.

    If these coins start having problems in their slabs, I predict that the death of CU will be imminent........the litigation would make the original lawsuits surrounding the SSCA find look like child's play....

    If these coins start having problems in their slabs ... Are there more of these beauties from the sea that now look like this?

    edited to add: or did this one just not photograph well?

  • Looks like either copper spotting returning or incomplete removal of cleaning...excuse me curating residue.

    Coin;
    If I remember correctly, not too long ago, here at the forum, there was rhetoric about weather or not PCGS slabs were air-tite along with their competitors. I guess this will answer sooooooo many questions...image

    Just copper spots returning after a dip- no big deal this happens on gold if it's dipped or not sometimes. mike

    Despite the language used by the cataloguer (which could be merely a figure of speech), I have not seen any proof, that the coin was not already like that, when slabbed.

    I have viewed numerous gold coins in MS65 (and higher) holders, which displayed copper spots or stains.

    I for one prefer coppery spots on original gold to a bright yellow overdipped unnatural look. Copper spots have always been a good sign of orig gold. $20 gold pieces are big coins and the faces on 65 coins usually look too abraided. That's how they come. They don't look as clean as Morgan dollars in MS65. While I guess they should in theory, there is no theory involved with grading coins. Every series is graded to a diff standard. PCGS wouldn't want to make this too easy for every one.

    The 57-s hoard $20's have tremendous luster on them and most of us would take a few scuffs rather than get dullish luster with a clean look. Even curated, the CA hoard coins are just amazing looking coins. And I don't own one either.

    It is not the existence of copper spot(s) that I am concerned about. I am concerned whether the copper spots are stable or if they are new and/or dynamic (still growing). If not stable then I would be concerned about the "look" of this and other SSCA gold coins down the road. I would be more comfortable revisiting a SSCA gold coin in another two-three years.

    Even the 1875-S Liberty I showed earlier had a coppery area on the rim at 3 o clock but it hasn't changed one bit in the 8 years I have observed the coin.
