Monroe struck thru "M"

The struck thru wires formed what looks like an M. A few wires were struck thru on the REV as well...

Are you sure it's struck through? It almost looks like someone scratched it a long time ago.

I'm afraid they look like scratches to me as well.

I seriously thought these were scratches for a long time (I've never taken a close look at this coin until today), but today I broke out the 10x and now I'm pretty sure these marks are from struck thru wire. The way these marks start and the bends, I believe, are consistent with a struck thru coin. Also, the REV marks are for sure, I believe, struck thru marks...

techeff, most of the coins that I have seen that were struck through wire will have the same size marks throughout the coin because the diameter of the wire is always the same---------------------BigE

BigE -- Here is an example of a struck thru coin (PCGS Graded) with two different sized wires (look between the 9 and 6 for the second struck thru...

Ahh, I see what you are saying, but in that situation it look like the wire might have been wiped off the die and a piece of lint became entangled, you just dont usually see the "skipping" that shows up on the Monroe unless it is a scratch, but I could be wrong. Great pics by the wayimage------------------BigE

BigE, the '65 was actually graded wrong. PCGS graded it struck thru MS, but it's an SMS. They're reviewing it again as we converse... Now, the REV of this Monroe you have to agree is struck thru??? The OBV is very curious, but I believe is struck thru... Also, the area where it's dotted is interesting...

    That's no struck-through...it's a scratch.

I'd have to vote scratches as well: the acute angles on the reverse, and the "skipping" on the obverse.

I would think a "master collector" would at least be able to recognize the REV as a struck thru??? how about the kennedy? is that a struck thru or a scratch? is it an SMS or MS??

the Kennedy is awful baggy for an SMS. I'll go MS on that one. Your Monroe is indeed "interesting"

Looks like a scratch to me also. A scratch would leave some raised metal so maybe look at the coin at an angle for displaced metal in the lowest lying most protected area where this metal would not be worn off. I hope I am wrong and it is struck thru. mike image
