I'd build a circulated set of redbook type colonials.

They're interesting, historcially signficant, and genuinely rare yet they are dramatically undervalued compared to coins like high grade unc. Franklins and Kennedys which exist in (relatively speaking) absolutely enormous numbers and are readily available any time, anywhere.

I agree with Colonial Coin Union, theese coins have real history in them. I do not own any but colonials are something I would be proud to have. Joe

I think I need a litle more info. What have you been collecting? What is your budget? Do you like old circulated coins or more modern unc coins?

Commemoratives are great, different designs are what I like about the series.I'm collecting a date set first, than I'll go back and pick up the coins that were struck by the other Mints.

I think you should seriously consider Proof Bust Dollars by die state. I would be interesting to see the progression of the dollars as the dies wore out. It is not as popular as just proof bust dollars, but would be far more interesting.

Unfortunately, it depends on your budget if you want to have any hope of completing the series.

I'm currently kind of working on slabbed 66+ Roosevelt dimes, toned and brilliant. Nice old raw Roosevelts are relatively cheap and are a very do-able set. I think they're cool, too.

go with a type set. than you be sure what you like. I personly like bust but not on my budget. what are you looking for in a series? if you would like to finish up quick go with SBAs Ikes or Franklins. they are cheap and easy to come by. if you don't mind sending a little more on keys the IHC are a nice set. everyone loves a morgan they look and feel good in your hands. good luck with what ever you pick for you next series.

A hard question. As each of us here has our own favorites we'll each point you at ours.

Here are some questions that will help us.

    1) What series have you worked on up to now? Have any of these given you more pleasure then the others?
    2) When you look at your coin books, and images of coins at auction and on eBay, are there any that you find yourself coming back to again and again?
    3) What sort of price range per coin are you comfortable with? And what are you realistically able to spend each month toward your coins? Also how fast do you feel a need to see 'progress'? Would you be happy with getting one coin a month, every two months? Half a year?

    Atarian,

If I read your post correctly, A budget of 600.00 a month can build you a nice set of a lot of things, and even in better grades. Youll have to decide what series you like, no one else can make a decision like that for you.

What ever series you choose, I would suggest spending some time reading a learning all aspects of the series, so that you can be a smart buyer. Many people would love to be able to spend the budget you have said for buying coins!

Work on a type set and you may find a coin set or type that you really like. I recently found that proof IHC's are beautiful and can be had on your budget.

Ok, with $600 a month to play with there is very little that you can't do.

It sounds as if you have worked in fairly modern series for the most part, and seem to have an interest in something a bit older. That allows for a lot of room to look about.

A lot of posters are saying to try a type set and see if any series hits you strongly. That's not a bad way to go. But I still think you'd be better served goign to a show and just looking at a lot of coins and seeing if anything pops out at you. Your sig says you seek a lot of different things. Perhaps Large or Half Cents might be a place to explore, both are older series, that will challenge and fit your budget well.

SLQ are not so modern and with 600 monthly it would go fast even at mint state grades after you got the 2 keys. hey we all use lay-a-way plan sometimes. hell I won't have any keys without it.

At 300.00 per you could put together most of a nice set. If you want older I like the seated types. Die state varieties in the Bust era would be fun if you're into that kind of thing.image
