I felt that I needed a light diffuser because I was getting harsh light on the coins with the three light setup. Well, I used a plastic shopping bag around the coin and camera which worked very well. This is what I got.

About toned coins: I only have one nicely toned coin. The toning can only be seen at an angle, making focus an issue from front to back. Can the toning on some of those heavily toned dollars be seen from head on?

I'd say the lighting is about perfect. I like all the pics, but the Barber pic is my favorite.

my dcr dvd300 sony digital camcorder is cabale of diffusing pics like that...just need ta get it out and learn...

Please explain in a bit more detail exactly what you did. I get a lot of unwanted reflections on the plastic when I photograph a slabbed coin.

This is how i have it setup. I got a copy stand to stabilize the camera. pictures from straight on dont get glare off the slab. Lights come in from 3 sides at enough angle to keep reflections away. the plastic shopping bag diffuses the light. To get rid of the harsh lighting the the spot lighting creates.
