Is anyone familiar with 2 cent pieces?....

I recently purchased 2 2 cent pieces at ebay, 1 in a NGC-64 and 1 in a PCGS-64 holder both RB. On the 1864 Lg. Motto(NGC) The 'O' in Of has a tail that protrudes outward at 9:00 from the 'O" yet the 1865 doesn't. It's clearly visible. What's up with that?...image

    Ask Russ,

Not only does he know 2 cent coins, he will also know how to coach you in posting the pictures!

  • Welp, I gave it a shot. It's too distorted anyhow. Thanks for the help too. I have a $hitty scanner...image

Placid; It's not a die crack. It's like, imagine this, a carpenters square or inverted 'L' running from 9:00 to 12:00. It's a raised protrusion. This is about all I can say to describe it. It appears to have been part of the die engraving with the 'O'...strange but true!...

  • Here's a great and cheap book that's on Ebay for you.
Excellent for 2 cent peices and the price is right.

  • No Placid...This one's at 9:00 exactly like this... -O ... and it raised, as if purposely when they engraved the die...

Geez, that's less than half what I paid for my book.

    razorface1027,

It could be a die clash. There are quite a number of them on the Two Cent pieces. Could also be, as Placid said, a die crack. These coins have zillions with die cracks. Matter of fact, it's kind of hard to find circulation strikes without them.

Here's one with lots of die cracks:

I really like these coins, but I'm just on the very beginning of learning about them.

  • See man, that ticks me off! What do you use to get such great pics. I have this $hitful scanner, and I can barely operate it, let alone get pics like you dudes....I'm familiar with die cracks; however, this seems to be, as I stated in the previous thread, to be a full attachment to the 'O' and RAISED, as if part of the 'O'...It's weird...image

Die cracks are raised. When there's a crack in the die, the metal flows in to it and creates a raised spot on the coin in the shape of the crack. Yours may simply be a crack adjacent to the O that happens to be about the same depth as the letter, thus appearing as if it is part of it. Could also be a clashed die.

  • Man! What would I do w/o ya Russ...Thanks for the info. Are die clashes...RARE?

Not really. Dramatic, well defined ones are, but everyday weak little ones can be found quite frequently.

Frank Leone had over 100 1864 die varieties with pictures on his site, but now I can't find them. Maybe someone else knows where they are.

It could be a die gouge as well.

That's it! He moved it from another server. My previous link was broken. Thanks!

Razor, you will find this site informative.

  • Thanks for the link to the auction -- I had checked this book out several months ago from the ANA Library and really liked it. For under $9 with shipping, this was too good a deal to pass up...
  • Thanks folks! Welp, it appears to fit the criteria of a Leone 41-AH. Further investigation pending...image

  • Welp, after further investigation upon receipt of the book I purchased( the link was attached to this thread), the "oddity" on my 2 cent'er doesn't show in this catalogue; however, it is a 1994 copyright and possibly one that Flynn has yet to find...I dunno!...image "Back to the ole drawing board!"...image
