Lost USPS money order - need some advice

roadrunnerroadrunner Posts: 28,374 ✭✭✭✭✭
I sent off a USPS money order ($675) to an ebay seller 2 weeks ago.
He notified me this weekend that he had not yet received payment.
What is the protocol in this case? Or what is fair? The buyer has a coin he wants his money for. It brought a good price too. I have commenced a trace on it through the USPS but it could take up days (or weeks). Reimbursement for a lost MO can be made after 60 days. The seller is not going to want to wait 60 days. From my standpoint, I have no clue that the seller didn't get my letter. His feedback is good but I have no intention of sending a check for the same amount. I doubt a MO can be cancelled either.

Any ideas? Is the seller just gonna have to suck it up along with me until 60 days winds down? I guess if the seller can provide with air tight trade references I would likely be willing to fork over another
$675 to avoid a neg. Anyone care to comment?

I have never had this happen, but I'll take a stab at what to do. I would think that the seller would be understanding. If you saved the USPS money order receipt, I would think you would indeed get a refund after 60 days. I think your best option is to wait out the 60 days, then apply for a refund, and then send a new payment. Sorry this happened, but I'd give it a little more time. image

It can be cancelled. I think it costs like $9.00
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

I would scan the receipt and e-mail him or fax him a copy of it and hope he would be understanding. image

Thanks for the ideas. I do have the receipt from the MO as well as the tracer receipt. If he supplies a fax #, I'll send a copy. The $9 fee sounds like a good idea too. Better than waiting 60 days.

    Thanks to all.

I would offer the seller 10% to "hold" the coin for you for up to 60 days or whenever this is resolved. If the hold time expires, he keeps the money because he did you a favor and held it for you. If you resolve it before then, he should send you the coin and the 10% hold money. Of course, an element of trust is part of the equation, but if he has good feedback, I don't see this as a problem. I would accept this or a similar arrangement if I were the seller. It reaffirms that you, as a buyer, are not trying to string him along. And yes, I would either email him a pic or mail him a copy of the money order receipt. Anyway, good luck and I hope you will resolve this matter quickly.

I would wait another week. The USPS can tell you fairly quickly if it has been cashed. I would send another and if he receives it have him cash it and send you a check. I had mail take 3 weeks to get from Iowa to Florida. If he is a reliable seller you should have little to worry about.
I had the same problem once and it wurkt fur me.
