PCGS Grades In. How did I do?

291fifth291fifth Posts: 25,241 ✭✭✭✭✭
Ok modern commem specialists, I sent these coins in to PCGS on October 14 and was notified of the grades today. These coins were originally in the mint packaging (4 coin sets) prior to being sent in.

Is this good or bad based on your experience?

1991-5-P WWII Silver Dollar MS69
1991-5-D WWII Half Dollar MS69
1996-D Olympic Tennis Silver Dollar MS68
1996-D Olympic Rowing Silver Dollar MS69
1996-D Paralympics Silver Dollar MS69
1996-D High Jump Silver Dollar MS69
1996-S Olympic Swimming Half Dollar MS69
1996-S Olympic Soccer Half Dollar MS69
1996-W Olympic Flag Bearer $5 Gold MS69
1996-W Olympic Cauldron $5 Gold MS69

Should I have expected a MS70? How saleable is the MS68 Tennis Dollar?

I'd like to hear your comments.

All glory is fleeting.

All MS69 except 1 MS68. You did very well. All of the 1996 coins are scarce!

The MS68 might not sell for as much the MS69s, but being the scarce UNC Tennis it should still do fine.

I would say you did better than average. An MS or PR coin right out of the original packaging will not necessarily grade 69 or 70.

Of the 12 modern commems I have sent in to PCGS 11 have come back "69" and 1 has come back "68". Since all of these came straight from the mint packages it looks like I was quite lucky...especially since most of them were the better issues that actually have some type scarcity. One thing I have learned is that I must examine each coin more closely. If ANYTHING appears to be even slightly sub-par I will reject the coin.

    Congrats.

Not all coins out of mint packaging does as well. You did super.

Can you tell the difference between the MS68 and the MS69's?

If the coins are literally perfect MS70's, but they were graded MS69 or lower, you did extremely poorly.

If they were deserving of MS68's or lower, you did very well.

If the coins deserved MS69's, you did ok.

It's not just a matter of HOW they graded, but rather, how they SHOULD have (what they deserved to be) graded and we can't know that.

I don't actually have the "68" in hand yet. They mailed it to me today.

Congrats. Those grades are about what can be expected from modern commems. 70s are hard to make. I've examined several coins using 5-8x loupe that I thought were flawless but were graded 69. Of course, I'm just an amateur so that's not too surprising.

    Wanna sell/trade the gold?
