'Wiped'

How exactly is it done... was it really that simple? is it a procedure of the past or is it still being done? What current jewelers cloths best mimic the 'old effect' if someone wanted to experiment. Inquiring minds want to know the details.

    hold coin, rub with cloth.

there are many variations of this, using different cloths and possibly abrasive or soap compounds, and of course various degrees of damage imparted, depending on how much rubbing is involved.

it was a lot more common long ago, only in the past 50 years or so has it been "a sin" to clean coins.

I picture a guy rubbing a coin on his pant leg to shine it up. Many wiped coins I have owned seem to have only been done on one side and usually the obverse.

I have only ever seen NGC use the term "Wiped", usually in conjunction with "Obverse". I don't think I ever seen them say "Reverse Wiped".
  • When I think of 'wiped' I think of some gold or silver coin being subjected to an old jewelers cloth [which I believe contains very fine abrasives]. Always wanted to find out what exactly was in these cloths from 50-100 years ago even acquire one. Vaguely remember as a boy wanting to use the Kozak cloth from my fathers car to 'clean' my slq's.
Note: Most of the coins I've seen as wiped the lines were parallel and not a circular pattern or mish mash pattern?

I hope I never witness any backside being wiped!

  • A wiped coin is one that has been rubbed with a dry cloth or other abrasive material leaving fine "hairline" scratches on its surfaces.

  • Rampage,

All joking aside, I had a 1904 $20 Lib returned bagged from NGC as "reverse wiped", may be unusual but does happen, and no I dont want to see anymore either.. image I do agree it is usually the obverse.
