1923 MS-64 Peace Dollar: Has the sight of one single coin inspired anyone here to collect the whole

So I walk in the coin shop today and I see the above slabbed coin and I'm in awe. Flowing light luster, clean fields-beautiful 64. I walk away even though the price is right ($37) saying to myself "how might I build on this one on a budget".
Should I do a series (has anyone done the following?) of common dates in MS63/64 with the keys and semi keys in XF/AU? Would an intercept shield or Capitol Holder be better?

Yes even though I haven't been all that successful with most sets. Just have fun

  • I`m doing 2 sets at once ( PCGS graded PR69DCAM Ike`s and MS Peace Dollars ) on a budget. The lowest grade of the Peace is a 1934 - S in VF25 and the highest is a 1922 - P thats a MS65. Of the 12 I have so far of the Peace Dollars, 6 are a ciculated grade and the other 6 are between MS62 and MS65. I doubt if I`ll put it in the registry set. It`s not my thing and isn`t the reason why I collect them. Just that I`m probably one of the few people on the forums that actually likes the Peace Dollar and Proof Ikes. With the common date Peace, you may want to go as high as MS65 or even MS66 if you got the money to throw around. The luster and frost of the MS65 I have is simply delicious and suggest that you consider one or a few 65`s in the mix.image
  • there are only two tough Peace Dollars, and you can build the easier parts of teh set quickly and beautifully for not a lot of money. Hold out on giving in to lower grades on those key dates and continue to salt some dough away for them. They will always be out there, and when complete, you will enjoy the collection that much more.

No sets here, just a higher class of coin. It was a IH that did it. That one coin turned the collection of a bunch into a smaller group of great. Still a rushimage

yep. My ikes are done in bu and proof (raw and in a dansco, of course) and my peaces are missing a few pieces (also raw, but in an old Library of coins album, mostly toned sliders but a few near gems including outstanding 1925S and 1926 coins)

1907, go back and get that coin, you will never regret it if you do, and you will always wonder, if you don't.

    thanks. It's a $65 "MS64" that I wouldn't part with for less than $300.

I'll say it again. Go Back And Get That Coin!

  • For me.. It was the first Proof Silver eagle. I had always want to collect coins but just never did. Was online a few years ago surfing and bought a Proof from the mint. That did it. I vowed to collect the whole set. Not having any information at the time when I made the vow I thought in my mind, how much could it really cost. Now I save a little out of every paycheck to purchase a 95W. Now I pick up a few coins of current mintage just to collect. I do love proofs.... I guess I am a crow at heart.

    Welcome to the forums David!!!

The first time I ever saw an image of a barber coin, it was an illustration of coins on a book cover my father had many years ago, I don't even know the name of the book but I still remember that drawing.

The first time I ever saw a barber coin in person I bought it, guess I was hooked for life.

  • Just an idea for the Peace series: 9 most common in 64, 8 next common in AU58(can these be found fairly lustrous?) and 7 least common in VF-XF(are these ok if not scruffy?)
Now who had that beautiful collection of Peace dollars in the Black Capitol Holder not too long ago. I remember a thread where this collection was posted. Can any one find it and post the link?image
