Genuine? Odd 1886 nickel

This nickel has a strange look to it. Do you think it's genuine? Not many have bid.

looks corroded, possibly a coin recovered from the ground??? stored poorly? it has a reserve too, and they dont get as many bids as non reserve auctions. i would pass and keep looking

Nothing wrong with it except that it's corroded to the point of being worthless...which is why not many have bid on it. Small miracles do happen.

Does acid in soil turn it this grey color? I know it can pit a coin pretty good.

It is a semi-key so in good condition, it's worth about $50 to $60. (Though this one looks worse then that.) But at AU the price jumps to around $200 to $300. Being they've over graded it and want too much for shipping, this is one to pass on. If this is a date you're looking for, you would be better served to look for one at a coin show where you can actually see what you're getting.

I've seen several of your post. You need to become much more selective on what you bid on. Don't bid on damaged coins. The coin in question in this post is a piece of junk that is not worthy of your consideration.

    291 said it,

This coin is a piece of junk, not worth the 14.00 its already at. Heavily corroded. Youd be better off buying a Fair-2 with a ledgible date with no problems as to buy that coin.

stay away from stuff like this!

I think my problem is more with impatience then selectivity. When I decide on a coin I want to target, I want it right away, instead of waiting for a good coin at a good price. Therefore I'm usually disappointed in my purchases later. Something I need to overcome.

I've done that also, but not as much anymore. An 1886 isn't that hard to find, so just wait a bit until you find one that makes you glad it's the one you finally got. Put aside money for it gradually, and as time goes on you'll have more to spend on a better one when you find it. I'd recommend getting a certified one, just to make sure it hasn't been cleaned or something. You'll get a better one, both in quality and condition.
