What has the Gov't done to our nickel?

fivecentsfivecents Posts: 11,207 ✭✭✭✭✭
I agree it is time for a design change for the Jefferson nickel, But why did they choose the indian peace medal design? Isn't that a slap in the face of the native American indians? I thought the American Gov't broke every treaty they made with the indians.

Why are we still keeping Thomas Jefferson on the nickel for the design change? I think it is time we moved on.

I agree that any change is a good thing on such an old design. The U.S. Mint should have come up with a totally new design. I always say that most decisions are either economically or politically motivated, but I haven't quite figured out how either one of these things plays into this decision! image

I sort of like the compromise. Keeping Jefferson there while giving the nod to one of his crowning achievements - aside from the Declaration . . .
The Body of Benjamin Franklin Printer (Like the cover of an old book Its contents torn out and stript of its lettering and gilding) lies here, food for worms.
But the work shall not be lost for it will (as he believed) appear once more in a new and more elegant edition revised and corrected

It is time for the Mint to change designs on the cent, the dime and the half dollar. They don't need any Congressional approval since the designs are 25 years. All they need to do is to keep their mouths shut and do it. The problem is as soon as the design process gets in the press we get into all of this politically correct crap and the coin never gets changed. It only takes the Director of the Mint to get some guts and get the changes made.

It's ugly. I think uglier than any of the state quarters, except maybe New Hampshire. I have complete set of nice Jeffersons, and believe me, I don't want to put this piece of crap anywhere near them.

Thomas Jefferson on the nickel is OK by me.
He was, after all , the author of the Declaration of Independance.

How about something current for the reverse, like the Twin Towers,
and " Remember 9/11" or " United WE Stand ".

Might sent the terrorists ( and the rest of the world ) a message !

    << <i>BRING BACK THE SHIELD NICKEL!! >>

I love that design, but I think that is a move backwards. America has alot of talented artists. We should be able to come up with a brand new CLASSIC design in 2004 without copying the past. The shield nickel has had it's run.

You have all probably heard the saying " You can't please all of the people all of the time." Well, it don't matter what they do to change coinage designs, this will always be the case.....Ken

Not the Director of the Mint, he doesn't have that authority. It is the Secretary of the Treasury who has the power to change the designs that are over 25 years old without the approval of Congress. This may be one of the reasons why we can't get design changes. No one ever seems to be able to remember who has the power and we keep complaining about the Mint Director or lobbying Congress instead of concentrating on the ONE person who can accomplish it. Lloyd Benson would have been the perfect one that shold have been "worked" on. When he resigned as Secretary he was also resigning from politics and would no longer have had a constituancey to have to answer to.

It's not our nickel. It is owned by the state of Virginia.
