Wahoo! 7 Years of Checking Change has gone CHA CHING!
I finally did it! I found silver in my change! Went to the bakery and picked up an eclair, and felt generous to put my mom's coffee on the bill, too... because I did that, I got dimes, not a quarter, in my change... and that made all the difference... a lightly worn, dark 1964 dime, all mine!
Glad I've been checking change for at least the past 7 years...

I find very little in change, but I'll certainly never find anything if I don't check.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
my step dad found an 82p dime in change back in 82 or 3! My buddy used to own/run a service station. he found a '95 DDO 1c
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

But the silver is another story, I seriously doubt that silver worth multiples of face has stayed in circulation for 38 years after changing to clad in 65. More then likely your dime was a fellow collector salting the hobby. I haven't found anything special this year but 2 years ago on 2 seperate occasions I got 2 circ war nickles in change from the same pop machine, coincidence ? I don't think so. My last silver quarter was 3 years ago in change from a convienience store. Only thing this year was 1 common low grade wheatie.

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Very possible. The other day I paid a gas station a 19.09 bill with a twenty and 9 1955-s bu red lincoln cents. I guess you would call that salting the hobby.
Nice red lincolns with only a few small black spots on each one, but they looked like 2003's and will maybe
thrill somebody.

I LOVE finding silver in my change! I got a silver dime about three weeks ago.
While it may be a collector salting change or a kid spending his dad's collection, I've thought that the influx of silver and wheat cents in change in northern New Jersey over the past couple of years is due to the number of CoinStar machines we have here.
I routinely see people putting quart (and larger) jars of change into our local CoinStar machine. Some of that change has probably spent the last 20 years sitting on someone's dresser!

A few weeks back I cracked a roll of dimes into the cash register at work. One of the dimes looked odd, so I plucked it out. 1865 Three Cent Nickel. Not in bad shape either EF40 or so. It was that event that clinched my decision to do a date set of the series to match My Liberty Nickels when they are done. The Universe has spoken! :-) It has become a pocket good luck piece, carried in my wallet.
Cool silver find airplanenut. As some one who works a register (I manage a comic book store) I see silver about once a month. Coinstar really increased the number of silver and other older coins popping up in circulation.

<< <i>Hey Jay was that bakery in NJ? I think i may have spent that dime in there by mistake getting my coffee.
Yeah... uh, right, Coz... the coffee was $1.05- no need to use a dime, since you could use a nickel...

I'm wondering, did you discover the coin by looking at it, or could you tell right away by the sound as the cashier put the change in your hand?
never heard the term, but I also love to spend common wheaties and dateless buffs, to give people a chance to find stuff, usually I put em in a tip jar on the counter or into the coinstar machine with my other change.
can't bring myself to spend silver though!
nice find Jeremy

I always check change. Mostly because I tried to pass a Canadain coin and vendor asked for US. I did not realize it was canadain and they made me feel like a thief. Many years ago as a kid. It was a store that my family always shopped at and from then on the old man behind the counter looked at each coin I gave like I made them myself.

Edit that- I am forgetting the two mini-hoards I got in bank rolls- one of War nickels (five or six rolls) and the other of 40% Kennedies last year (3 rolls, I think- I forget).
But it has been 13 or 14 years since I found a stray single in loose change.
