The greed of the US Mint - Jefferson Nickels?

The US Mint, in their greed, has now released the 2004 Jefferson Nickels. We are privileged to be able to buy the Spring version and then the fall version.

What will be next – two versions for each year denomination?

No, the greed will be when they sell a special proof version of each nickel for $9.95 each.

Or a proof and unc set of each 2004 design in a cherrywood case for $45.
Or perhaps two different 2004 proof sets!

Actually, I like the terms spring version and fall version. The Mint hopes you'll fall for their hype and spring for the coins. image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I don't know, I kind of like the idea. It's a nice way to commemorate one of the greatest quests of discovery in our nations history.

Where does it say you can now buy them now (before 2004)? Everyone knew they were going to produce them.

Well, we've got five for each quarter.

I dunno -- I like the new nickels. At this point, any change is good. It starts the ball rolling for a total refresh of our circulating coinage, which is long overdue.

IMHO, we need a 1916esque coinage revolution. All evidence to the contrary, there have got to be talented artists and sculptors here in the USA. Where is the St Gaudens of today? The Weinmann? The DeFrancisi? Find these people and get them to make coins. State quarters and L&C nickels are only the beginning.

Since the Jefferson nickel has remained essentially unchanged for 66 years I am delighted to see some new designs.

Now if we could just get some quality artists, unencumbered by political hacks, to design our coins some real progress could be made.

I hope this is not the new trend to have many different versions of a coin in a given year. The state quarter program is fine but do we need to "celebrate" trees or have a series of "PC" correct reverces. Just use your imagination where this might lead.

If they are doing one design Spring 2004 and another fall 2004 what is going to happen in 2005 before they go back to the original design 2006?

I can think of a dozen reasons not to have high capacity magazines, but it's the reasons I haven't thought about that I need them.

I think it really sucks there will be no 2003 version. 1803-2003 makes sense. I cannot believe they had all year(s) to figure this out and they just got it done. Utterly amazing.
