question on 2 &1/2 $ liberty cleaned/ whizzed

I sent in a 1904 1/4 liberty , looked ms65 but did lack luster. came back cleaned/ whizzed. Now what do you all suggest. I thought pocket it for a week and hope for a xf.

  • I would think you would have to carry it around for a lot longer than a week, if it were whizzed.

Was it on a invoice with all gold or mixed with other types of coins?
  • 1 invoice all by itself

If you can't tell it's whizzed maybe send it back with some silver/copper coins next time you have some coins to send.
I find it odd a 1804 would get bagged for cleaning.

  • Placid, my error it is a 1904, sorry

I find it interesting that cleaning is regarded as so vile that one would prefer a non-cleaned (looking) coin, even if worn to a lower grade.

But to answer your question, no, I would not try to pocket-wear a $2.50 gold, it's too small to risk loss or damage by dinging around with other coins, and IMO it would take a long time, and won't get any better, just worse. Depending on the coin, of course, and where the hairlines are. Do you have a pic.

Anyway, better to send to ANACS and try for UNC details, cleaned/whizzed, net AU 55 or 50.

A coin just is what it is.

  • I thought whizzing would cause parallel lines in protected areas that wouldn't wear off. To paraphrase the Baptists, "Once whizzed, always whizzed." Am I wrong about this?image

Depends. I certainly can, but not always.

Imagine whizzing with a coarse wire brush: deep, harsh lines you can see easily

compare: whizzing with a soft cotton wheel and some toothpaste: more of a polished look.

sounds like the 1904 quarter eagle in question is subtly rather than blatantly whizzed.

again, a pic or 2 would help

What is the designation number (two digits before the cert number)?

92|N-2 Cleaning - by cloth or dipping. Harshly cleaned.

94|N-4 Altered Surface - Whizzed, harsh cleaning, thumped over (using a pasty substance to alter the appearance).

I suspect, from your description, it's a 94 because you say "but did lack luster." You might consider a conservation service or dipping it before trying to wear it down to a lower grade.
