hiding pcgs ser # ?

I have noticed that now and then a PCGS graded coin on Ebay will have the serial number covered. Why is that? Is that something I should avoid if I am shopping for a coin and they cover the serial number?

Gotta be a red flag that you may not receive the same coin at purchase, unless there is some other reason I haven't come up with

you have whats called cert number theives... they go around building registry sets with the cert numbers and dont buy the coin. Then the person that does buy has a little hassle on thier hands to get the coin removed..

This happened to me when I bought my 53s FBL. Some other person in the Franklin Registry set kindly helped himself to the number. Then played stupid when caught.

I just finished running 4 Franklins on e-bay and did not show the serial numbers. The more material you have in the picture, the less coin you have in the picture. I had one person e-mail me for the serial # of one of the coins, and I gladly provided it. Now, not pointing any fingers, or accusing anyone of anything, but why do people seem to think that the leaving out of certian things on auctions automatically point to a scam or underhandedness? People are just human beings and forget things, and worst of all, do things their own way.....Ken

I run my auctions with all coin, no plastic. As far as I'm concerned the plastic just takes up space that can be used to present a large image of what is supposed to be the important part. Of course if somebody wants the cert number all they have to do is right click the image and check the properties. I use it for the file name.

I always show the serial numbers when I list a PCGS coin for auction. To me, that gives the buyer assurance that I actually have the coin, and that is the coin they are recieving. Especailly since, when I buy a PCGS coin, if the number is not visible, I usually dont bid.

If it is causing problems with the registry, then PCGS needs to remedy this by some other means. To me if someone has to steal serial numbers to get thier name in lights, or be recognized then all I can say is "shame on em"

I tend to focus more on the coin also as seen in my auction here:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2199419838&category=11973&rd=1

but, this maybe a better way to do it, in my other auction:

There are two possibilities I can think of:

    1. The seller has several of the item and only want to take one photo. On things like PR69 moderns this probably makes sense since you couldn't tell the difference from the photo anyway in most cases.

    2. The "seller" is a scammer who has lifted the photo from someone else's auction.

Because of possibility #2 I will only bid on such auctions if the seller is known to me to be reliable.
    All glory is fleeting.
