I do not know this series, but the face seems odd? Is it normal for the entire face to wear away yet still have an eye hole and lips that extend that far? Without knowing much about these, I think it looks like it's been retooled.
Nothing unusual about the wear pattern on this coin; that's typical for them. In fact it seems like a pretty nice example, which is the surprising part, as this seller most often specializes in lightly to moderately cleaned stuff.
congrats on filling an increasingly tough type coin, my 1820 is only a VG10, I think your 1821 is an easy F12 in anyone's holder and possibly as high as F15. Let us know how you like it once you get it. BTW 1907 did you ever get that with motto seated dollar you were shopping for??
seated dollar was suspect-I thought it to be retoned. Perfectly happy with my G6! 1871 original!!-for now... Before purchasing Ernie's coin I had my local dealer check the scan (he's a very conservative grader) and calls it an almost fine but indeed original. I do like the cameo style where the devices are brighter than the field. Alex also pointed out that the darker are on Liberty is a lower part of the coin and really points to the originality. I know I paid a premium but I did not want to get into a possible bidding war. Will report when coin's in hand! Any other cap bust graders out there?
couple of people have mentioned the "marks near the nose" which, even if light scratches, do not, to me, seem uncommensurate with a mid-grade circulated coin. If the coin were minted this year, sure, they would be a problem, but on this coin in this grade are probably negligible.

It's an original piece with wear. I like it
(the worn down eye makes it look like an Asian)
