1944S

question i know in the old days people manually stuck coins before machines of today but what is teh explaination for why one of my 1944S coins have the S right under tucked up right between teh 9 and the 4 . and on another coin same year and mint the S is alot lower than the other one. i dont htink there is a size difference but what is the deal?
