Error coin post 2: Struck through grease

Here is a New Jersey quarter, still in the mint package, that I got from the mint in 99. Anyway, what I would like to know is what severity of error is this? Does the coin have any additional value in that it is part of a mint set?

Also, I am assuming that it was struck through grease, is this correct?

That's a pretty cool looking quarter! I never get anything good like that from the mint.image

Some bad quality control at the mint to not notice that. Appears to be a strike through. It's pretty cool due to the severity. I'm not sure about any premium.

  • Not an error expert but I'll play one on this post...

That's a filled die error. The die might have been partially filled with grease to cause that, but the term "struck through grease" is used to describe a coin where the entire surface is vague and rough because the grease was between the coin blank and the dies.

Quite an impressive filled die, nice coin!
  • I would pay a premium for a coin like that, if I collected errors. It is very striking.
  • Did somebody say struck thru? image

That is certainly one beautiful and impressive error coin! I'm sure it's worth a premium in and of itself; however, as part of a mint set, it must be worth more.

  • BTW, nice coin jmcu. And I would agree with struck thru grease. image

Looks to me like the planchet might be defective since the strike is weaker on the same side of the coin, perhaps thinner on one side than the other-weigh it!-----BigE

  • Its "struck thru grease" or a "filled die" (one in the same term) as you said. Although the Mint does not actually use "grease" on their dies. My guess on a premium would be about $25-$35 retail. Strike-thrus are fairly common and not that dramatic so they don't tend to bring alot of money.

  • Well, I wouldn't sell it that cheap. Unless it's to me. image

I've seen less dramatic state quarter filled dies go for more than that.
