1956 D odd looking RPM

This 1056D cent appears to have a hollow RPM image to the right of the D. It looks like the shape of a D but may just be another problem. Any thoughts ?

My original thought was the same but what is confusing is the right rim of the D mint mark is not damaged which to me means the coin was minted with this flaw. It also appears there are signs of a D in what appears to be the crater to the right. If you look inside the D mint mark it appears there is a line coming down inside the D which could be the left side of another D.

It appears to be a RPM which experienced a die chip at the site.

What's the line in the top of the loop in the 5? Errant RPM?

My guess would be foreign object on the die which fell of after minting.

That's interesting. It has the shape and many of characteristics of the D next to it. It IS odd looking. It just might be.

Hi Dam,

I am not sure what the line is on the date. I think it is just a metal chip that ended up getting set into the date.

Looks like grease or lamination. Since it is concave, it isn't a die chip.

Struck through a thin flake of something thin enough to let the right side of the the D be at least partially struck up but it caused a depession in the field area.

I don't think its a die problem but a damage planchet.

I'm with 'bigtonydallas' and 'Condor101'...some strike through of a foreign object between the dies at the time of striking.

I would think the D would have been flat more if there were something between the die and planchet. It for sure isn't a filled die. I thinking maybe an air bubble in the lamination or laminated split.
