Sticky stuff on slabs

I hate it when dealers put price stickers on that hologram area on slabs. Some times they come off quite easily, other times the stickers can be practically impossible to remove without scratching the plastic or ruining the hologram. One time I even had to send a slab in for reholdering because it looked so bad, I couldn't even stand looking at it!

Does anyone know what would be good to use to remove the stickers that won't wreck the plastic or the hologram?

  • My brother used a blow dryer to get the pinstriping off of his car. He said the stripes came right off and left no residue whatsoever ...

    Just a thought.

Goo Gone works pretty well at removing price stickers and your slabs will have a clean citrus smell also. Just make sure none seeps around the edges.

I used acetone on the slab that I really ruined. It totally ate away at the plastic, leaving a big whitish opaque area.

I don't think you want to use heat or acetone on plastic slabs; certainly not with a coin insde. Try Goo-off or Wd-40 instead.
  • I also hate it when sellers put stickers on slabs! I've found that rubbing it gently with your thumb and forefinger for about a minute works pretty well. That way, you don't have to use any harsh chemicals.

Edited to Add: For all of the sellers and dealers out there, PLEASE don't put stickers on the slabs! image

Yup. Alcohol is the easy & effective way to do it, it's pretty inert & evaporates right away. I use alcohol and a Q-tip. I then wipe the
front & back coin & label panels with the Q-tip. Before it dries on it's own I dry it with toilet paper so there's no streaks.

  • A pet peeve of mine as well. I use GOO GONE, as previously mentioned. It will leave the slab unharmed. Holograms too if you're careful.

Note that this is NOT the same stuff as Goof-Off (which is much more commonly available). That is too strong and will eat slabs.
  • I would be wary of acetone and isopropanol. I totally destroyed an air-tite holder by wiping with isoprop. Goo-Gone seems to be the dealer's choice, based on shows I've attended.

Where do you get Goo-Gone? Could I get it at a regular store or Home Depot or somewhere like that?

  • Hot water does the trick too. You just need to soften up the adhesive. I usually put a few drop on the label and let it soak for a while. Then the label peels off rather easily and the residual glue can be wiped off with a lint free soft cloth.

I can think of a dozen reasons not to have high capacity magazines, but it's the reasons I haven't thought about that I need them.

I just rub it off with my finger then use a dry kleenex on it then repeat as needed.

A dealer is who showed me the alcohol method. Never had a problem. Air-tites must be a totally different plastic.

I used Turpentine (just a few drops) - all the gunk wiped away VERY easily with no damage to the slab at all - the slab looks perfect.

After removing the label, or as much as will come away, I've used WD-40 to make the sticky residue go away. I think Lucy also recommended WD-40...
  • WD-40 is a penetrating lubricant. Not something you'd want to get in the seams of your slabs. Also, it is specifically designed to leave behind an oily film... again not something you really want around your coins.

So after removing the label with WD-40, you should remove the oily residue left behind. With, oh, let's say, something like GOO GONE. image

WD-40 works great!! Just spray some on a paper towel rub it on the glue and the residue is gone. I would not use acetone to remove glue,it will eat into the slab.

Press Scotch brand or similiar clear packaging tape repeatedly on to the residue. Use a clean area of the tape and keep pressing and using a new area of the tape until all the residue is gone. Takes a little practice but does not hairline the slab or leave any kind of residue whatsoever. I have been using this method for many years. image
  • I went to Walgreen's and got a bottle of Goo-Gone. Now I just have to go out and get a new slab with goo!
