1961 Franklin - Poof? Mint set?

Hi,

I have a 1961-P Franklin that is sealed in one of those cellophane type holders that the un-circulated mint sets come in. It’s been cut away from the other coins in the set.

My question is: Is this a proof coin, or from a mint set? It looks so mirrored I feel like it’s a proof coin, but I don’t know if they came in those kind’s of wrappers back then. I know the proofs are all S mints now, but I also wasn’t sure if they were from other mints then too.

Thanks!

  • The proof sets 1955-1964 came that way from the philidelphia mint. It sounds like a proof. I have all the proof sets from 1955-1964 in clean government issue envelopes. None of mine seem to be cams so I dont bother having them slabbed.
  • I think both proof and mints sets came in that cellophane packaging in 1961. If you had all the coins I believe you could tell by looking at the mint token that came with them. However if the half was cut out I guess you would have to tell by looking at the coin.

Probably a proof if you're not sure. The uncs are P and D and the proof is P.

The proof sets had clear plastic which looked very much like the mint sets except
that the P package has a blue border along both long sides and the D a red one.

I know that is true for the 1968 and later mint sets but I'm not sure it holds true for the 59 - 64 sets. Not enough experience with those sets.
