broken collar Lincolns

gonzergonzer Posts: 3,052 ✭✭✭✭✭
30 years ago I cherry-picked a dealer at Long Beach for 4, what he sold as broadstruck '73 Lincolns at $5 apiece.
Turns out that they were a new error called a 'Broken Collar' where the retaining collar was cracked through and
the metal flowed into the 2 opposite cracks creating little nubs on the edge. I did not notice any other years that this erroe affected
and since I still like to keep up, has anyone come across this great little piece in recent years. The coin's appearence is slightly like that
of a minor broadstrike. Thanks

  • I have seen a couple cracked and broken collars over the years but you don't see them very often. I have seen cracked collars like you describe where the metal just squeezes into the crack and forms a "nub" on the edge, and I have seen a couple of coins where a piece of the collar has actully broken away causing a much larger lump on the edge. A Collar cud so to speak.
  • Earlier this year 2002 Kennedy Halves were discovered with collar cuds in several different locations with a couple different die pairs. These were hot when first discovered and traded for around $25 each. As far as I know there are no other denominations reported with collar cuds. However, all of the Kennedy's were struck normally (no diameter differences, only the collar cud). Any chance of a photo of your lincolns?
