What makes a 1981 Kennedy type 2?

Does anybody know the difference between a type 1 and type 2?
Thanks,
Joe

I would imagine the same as the SBA type II.

Ok then, what is the difference in the SBA type 1 & 2?
  • It's a different/clearer S mintmark. You'd just have to look at pics to see the differences. 1979 has these differences, too. Many of the coin books have photos.

I seriously doubt it's anything similar to the SBA, but wait for the Kennedy experts (like Russ) to weigh in.

Russ usually checks the boards every day.

    Joe,

Some of the 1979 coins were struck with a bloblike S mintmark. Later 79 coins were struck with what is known as a clear S. These are the 79 type I and II. The clear S mintmark was used through part of 81 and is the 81 type I. The later portion of 81 the mintmark was changed. The late 81 mintmark has a bulb serif at each end of the S. It is known as a type II, and occasionally called a flat S. A quick search of this site will bring up pics. Hope that helps.

Yes, Don, but he's asking about Kennedys. Or do you mean Kennedys?

  • It's the same for quarters, halves, and dollars. Not sure about the other denoms.

It's the same for all 79 and 81 proof coins. The best photo's I've seen are here . Scroll down the page and you'll see them.

    Thanks! That helps!
  • The Type 1 has a "Fat S" Mint mark where the type 2 has a "Clear S" mint mark. The Type 2 is mich sharper and more readable.
