My latest half dollar hunt

I went to three banks yesterday and got 24 rolls of half dollars. I didn't get a single silver but I DID get two really nice proofs. I got a 1978 S and a 1981S. Both have some frost on them, belivve it on not!

I've always wondered how proof coins and other non-circulating issues find their way into rolls. My theory is that some alcoholic coin collectors ran out of money for their fix and had to tap the safe. Don't laugh. Last week I was in the local convenience store, and I saw a guy bring in a gallon jar of change to spend on lotto tickets. I'm sure if he had any proofs, they would have gotten spent as well.

My guess is that somebody knew a little about coins. Enough to look for silver and pull them out of a stolen collection and sell them to a coin dealer. The proofs looked like a lot of the others, so they got rolled up and taken to the bank.

I have one proof Ike Dollar with a big fat fingerprint on it. Not sure where it came from, but let's be honest - it's only worth a dollar now. Maybe I should go spend it.

Yup. No good way to remove the fingerprint. There are a few smudges on these too. Maybe good candidates for a givaway to a 10 year old new collector. It will be a good lesson on what happens if you touch your prrofs wrong!

Your many posts on your bank trips inspired me, so a few weeks ago, while I was making a deposit at my bank I asked my teller if she had any pre-1964 half dollars or dollars. Beleive it or not, she looked at me and said, "As a matter of fact a old lady just gave me some." She pulled out 5 1964 Kennedy halves, 5 1963 Franklins, and 2 1966 Kennedy's that look BU. Needless to say, I ask about coins every time I go in now.

I routinely cherrypick rolls from the bank. Over the years, I've found a number of silver coins, a couple of IHCs, a handful of Wheaties, some foreign, and some choice BU moderns, including a number of varieties. It can get tedious, however. Sometimes I buy up to $100 worth of rolls in all denominations.
