It's a different/clearer S mintmark. You'd just have to look at pics to see the differences. 1979 has these differences, too. Many of the coin books have photos.
Some of the 1979 coins were struck with a bloblike S mintmark. Later 79 coins were struck with what is known as a clear S. These are the 79 type I and II. The clear S mintmark was used through part of 81 and is the 81 type I. The later portion of 81 the mintmark was changed. The late 81 mintmark has a bulb serif at each end of the S. It is known as a type II, and occasionally called a flat S. A quick search of this site will bring up pics. Hope that helps.
