MS70 cleaner and toning

Hello all,

This is my 1st post although I have been reading this forum for awhile. I have a question about the MS70 cleaner. I used some to get some crud off of an brown unc indian head cent. It did take the crud off, but it also removed the brown toning. Does this mean the toning was artificial, like Deller's Darkner, or does MS70 remove toning from bronze or copper cents. The stuff is advertised to not affect bronze, copper, silver, and so on and was safe to use. Fortunately, it was an inexpensive year. Thanks for your input.

Welcome Doug. Good question and I would like to know the answer to that one myself. Someone told me that MS70 was a strong detergent or cleanser, not
    a solvent.

All I know is that MS-70 and copper coinage is a bad combination.

Oh, and welcome to the board!
  • Welcome Doug, ms 70 is high PH, caustic and is not kind to copper. image You can try and retone but the grading services will pick up on this.) IMHO

    Welcome, from another recent member!

  • If it was dark brown like a chocolate bar, it probably was porous! You removed the residual carbon and got back to a pink color, perhaps, and what you have left is a dead copper cent! Basically, the alloy of copper is going away!

Thanks for all the input and welcomes. The MS70 company should remove their statements about not affecting copper and bronze.
