Some thoughts on the ANACS grading of modern gold commems.

I just received a shipment of 10 modern gold commems back from ANACS. They had been submitted on their $9/9day gold special and were right on time. This was the first modern gold I have received back from ANACS. I was wondering if they really graded this type of material or just gave everything a "69".
They grade it...and conservatively as well.

Here are the results and some comments:
1984-W $10 (2 examples) both were graded PF69 Heavy Cameo. Both coins had been selected in person from a local dealer and both were in their original government packaging when purchased. No surprise here as I was very picky about these since they are very common.

1984-S $10 1 example purchased from an eBay auction in its original government packaging. This was graded PF68 Heavy Cameo. I had a feeling this one might not make "69" and I was right. Still, it is a very nice coin and the difference between it and the "69's" is minor.

1986-W $5 Statue of Liberty. Bought from a local dealer in its original government packaging. Graded PF68 Heavy Cameo. Honestly, I have no idea why this is not a "69".

1988-W $5 Olympics. Came back PF68 Heavy Cameo. As with the Statue of Liberty piece I have no idea why it not a "69". I own a PCGS "69" of this coin and can't tell it apart from this one.

1991-W $5 Mt. Rushmore. Came back PF67 Heavy Cameo. This coin had been dipped to remove haze prior to being submitted. They must have been able to see something though I can't.

1992-W $5 Olympics. Purchased in its original government packaging from a local dealer. Graded PF69 Heavy Cameo. No surprise here as this was a nice piece.

1992-W $5 Columbus. This was a eBay purchase in its original government packaging. Graded PF69 Heavy Cameo. I also have a PCGS "69" of this coin. This one is nicer than the PCGS coin.

1997-W $5 Roosevelt. Purchased from a local dealer in its original government packaging. Graded MS68. A disappointment. Really don't know why it is "68" and not "69".

1999-W $5 George Washington. Purchased from a local dealer at the same time as the Roosevelt. It was in its original government packaging. Graded MS69. Seems to have better "flash" than the Roosevelt. Could this be the difference?

Nothing came back "70". Has anyone seen an ANACS "70" in the modern gold commems? Has anyone seen an ANACS "70" in anything?

They definitely grade the coins. The difference between "68" and "69" is minute and I wish I knew just what they were looking for.

Overall, this seems to confirm my suspicions that ANACS is trying to move up in the grading service arena. No "gifts" here! While I may be unhappy with some of the grades received I am happy to know that they really are grading the coins.

Anyone else have recent experience with ANACS grading modern gold commems?

All glory is fleeting.
