I'm getting nostalgic for the good 'ol days...

This place has been too civil lately. Somebody say something nasty before I take this into my own hands!

No. There's nothing wrong with the coins. It's the people that collect them.

It has been quiet recently. With any luck the action will pick up without
a corresponding increase in flaming. This might lead some lurkers and more
    better known people into posting.

...or perhaps not. There are a lot of people reading these boards who rarely
    or never post, though.

There are also some newbies who might gain the confidence to sign up.

I actually like the quiet here. But since you insist...

I like the slabbing concept overall. I do pay a small to medium premium for attractively toned coinage. I do like some modern coins. I have dipped a few coins, but not too many or often. I had some pocket change slabbed just for my amusement. I don't long for the "good old days" of collecting...

Of course. What a disadvantage those old timers had! Think about how much better John Ford would have done if he had been born 50 years later.

Well, in the end we know it's all about one thing: having enough disposable money for the better coins. After all, how many of the best collectors or numismatists come from lower to middle income families?

Are you suggesting that poor collectors are somehow genetically disadvantaged??? You must be LOOKING to get flamed!

No, I'm just saying that it takes money to get those best coins. And I can say that because I'm one of those people who can't afford the coins I want. I come from a lower income family and am middle income in my adulthood. I have no shame about that whatsoever. But it puts me at a disadvantage when it comes to collecting the best coins.

There's a simple enough solution; just want the best coins you can afford. There
are many highly desirable, rare, &/or very high grade coins that anyone can afford.
Put together a collection of some of these and don't worry about how they perform
financially. If they do poorly then you can take consolation in the fact that most peo-
ple don't make money in coins and in the fact that you can't lose much if you don't
spend much. Of course, real collectors tend to do pretty well so you may not need to
    look for consolation anyway.

nwcs - Being poor puts you at a disadvantage in collecting the most EXPENSIVE coins, but many of the BEST coins aren't that expensive. You're just barking up the wrong trees.

Placid - How about sharing some scans of your first collection?

    Alright Andy, If you insist.

Andy, you are one miserable SOB, that's the last time you're EVER gonna stick me with those undergraded slabbed patterns, & you sold every one at 10% (back of) bid! This has GOT to stop! I'm reporting you to the ANA, the ABA, FBI, FTC AND I'm gonna ask PCGS to revoke your dealer priveliges - Uhhh what else? Oh yeah - terms - you gave me more than 2 weeks to pay for those undergraded dogs - I had enough time to raid the cookie jar, the candy jar, float a few checks - this has just GOT to STOP - You keep this up & I'm not gonna buy coins from you again image
