Crack out question

I have a common date 1927 saint in ms65. it is in a green holder, and came from a non dearler source. It is at least ms66 and has a shot at 67. Sorry i still can not upload pics but i am working on it. My question is this. Should I take it to baltimore and have pcgs review it in green holder or submit to ngc first for an upgrade only then resubmit to pcgs. I am sure of at least 1 point but wonder how pcgs would treat it in slab

I would crack it if I was sure it would upgrade and submit it raw just to rule out any possible prejudice.

I recently submitted a 1899 $20 that I bought from a dealer in a PCGS MS-62 holder. I submitted it to PCGS in its holder and they reslabbed it as MS-63 as it was clearly undergraded as a MS-62.

For a mere $25 or so I 'd take the first crack at just seeing if they'll upgrade the coin to a 66. They could also just bypass the 66 and go right to 67. At least then you've taken all risk out of the equation. There is always a chance they will not even regrade the coin due to a "hidden" problem. But with common gold this is pretty slim.

I just recently had an OH PCGS63 Saint that I sold as is for 64++ money. I figured the coin was a very good shot 65 coin. But nothing is a foolproof. If the coin is that good, there would be any number of dealers who would offer you $1800-2200 for the coin as is....that includes me too. Even in a 66 holder, if it is still a PQ shot 67 coin, it will bring strong 66 money in that holder.

I would resubmit it to PCGS at the show via "regrade" in the holder.

That way, you have no downside - I have seen many people (including very sharp dealers) crack out coins for upgrades and end up with downgrades or no-grades.

And, based upon my experiences, I am of the opinion that you have just as good of a chance for an upgrade at a show if the coin is submitted for "regrade" in the holder, as you do, if it is submitted raw.

You should definately submit it for a regrade to PCGS still in the holder. There is a great chance you will still get the upgrade. I resubmitted a first generation 1880-S Morgan MS64 to PCGS and it came back a MS66! I think they will admit when they have undergraded something in the past. Times change, people change, and these standards have changed.
