A racking dilema..HELP!......

To you the reader, this may seem long winded to some; however, please bear with me.
I started on a quest to achieve all the Morgan dollars including types and varieties recognized by PCGS. However, I've find myself, most recently, opening my blue boxes (X 5), all Morgans, and peering at the beauty of my CCs and having NO REAL INTEREST IN THE OTHERS. So, I'm beginning to ask myself, should I sell off the 60 or so that mean absolutely nothing to me; wherein, I can acquire the higher graded CCs and move on to collect various denominations of U.S. coinage in at least MS grade. Moreover, I'd like to hold on to the overdates & over MMs of this Morgan collection because they should increase monitarily to a greater degree through time than the regular dates. Furthermore, I began this quest with my munchkins in mind. You know, the legacy thing! I become very indecisive in matters regarding coin COLLECTING for my enjoyment, and again, leaving something behind for me munchkins when I kick the bucket.
Any help/feedback with TODAYS racking dilema is appreciated....image

Interests do change over time, so yes, I would unload the coins that no longer interest me and aquire those coins that do interest me.

It sounds like you want to keep the Morgans that mean something to you and are also somewhat difficult to locate. You also want to sell off the ones that have lost their charm and are easy to find (again, if need be) and focus again on coins that you enjoy and are enthusiastic in chasing down. Your heart beats of a true collector.
I see nothing wrong with that.

  • Sell the Munchkins and buy more coinsimage

Seriously, it sounds like you have enough Morgans to cherrypick the best ones and make a set of CCs and another of coins that are interesting to you.

  • If you want to leave something ofr the munchkins, buy stocks. This is your coin collection, do with it what you want.
  • Hey Tom,

I am thinking of doing exactly the same thing. I have over 50 morgans right now but there are several dates/mm's that I have more than one of. I will be selling the extras as soon as my new camera is delivered and I can get some good pics of them. Maybe I will be able to raise enough money to buy one of the key CC's that I need.

Sounds like you've made your decision already and you're just looking for approval. Well, go for it already.

Keep the CCs and dump the rest.

I made a very similar decision recently and sold off the 1971 to date coins from what was my #11 ranked proof Kennedy set. No regrets, and there's lots more room in the safe!

Post what you don't want for sale on the B S & T board. If it pains you to have to sell them for real then your decision should be easy. BTW that would be wracking with a W. There is a difference.

  • Thanks all for your points of view...I've loaded them up and they're ready for eBay.. It was a quick and painless decision. In fact, anyone needing Morgans, or, if you just care to check it out, the moniker here is the same there....Thanks again...image

A complete set of Morgans is a boring and tedious undertaking. You'll never have a matched set, just a hodgepodge of coins. Working on a CC set lets you put your efforts toward making a decent set, especially if you like DMPL's.

Dog97, A complete set of Morgans may be boring to you, but a complete set of Morgans all toned is far from boring. Just one persons opinion.image

I was thinking white. Yeah a set of toners is a sight to behold.

True to a degree. Even if you wanted to, a matched set is difficult because some of the coins are of extremely limited availability. Course if you have the $$$ then its a somewhat easier undertaking. Also if you aren't picky it is a tad easier too. Finding nice coins in an area where selection is extremely limited is a real challenge tho. The nice thing about Morgans is that it IS possible to complete a set even for a collector of modest means. Personally I see nothing wrong with having a set where the commons are MS65/66 and nice AU's of some of the tougher dates.
