Merc education thread Pt.II. The semi keys. Start with them. Suggestion on collecting methodology

I am assembling my fourth Merc set and each one was sellected with the following strategy in mind.

Start with the semi keys in VF+
1918's
1919D,S
1921, and 1921D
all the 1926 issues.
all the 1927 issues
all the 1928 issues
the 1931D and S

and then do the keys.
1916D
1942/1
1942/1D

fill in the gaps in the teens.
fill in the gaps in the twenties.

Start the post 1934-1940 range.

Finish the short set. 1941-45

Top it off with the micro-s

Excellent strategy and easier on the wallet as far as spreading it out.

Here is a 1926S that I just won on Ebay.1926-S semi key. PCGS-VF30

I need to start tackling some keys/semi keys......

Let me ask this.... 1916d's are easy to find...... just maybe tough to afford.....

what issue has been the toughest to locate in say a mint state grade?

19D and 19S are tough coins. Some of the other tough ones are the 23S, 24S, 25P, 25S, 25D, 26S, 26D (Nicely Struck ones), 27S and 27D. Also the 30S will suprise you to some extent. As with all coins it depends on what your taste is. I am still looking for a 40S that has the look I want. Going on 4 months now for that coin.

Ken is right, with extra emphasis on the 1919D and S, and the 1926D and S.

I would also recommend getting a 39S in full bands while you can still find one. Exceedingly rare in full bands, particularly in 65FB+, and grossly underpriced.

Oh, by the way, for anyone thinking that the 1939-S is a common coin in full bands.

CU prices are as follows:

65FB : $700
66FB : $1100
67FB : $3900

Expect to pay full CU, that is if you can find one, and you thought the 45P was tough in full bands.

The 31-S is also very tough in 64FB+.

Thanks for the great thread. And if you want an education on PCGS grading of these coins scroll through Fairlaneman's registry set and look at the coin before scrolling down to view the grade.

Thank You Sir for the compliment. Not all of the Registry folks are number chasers.

Just had to say that.

Brian sure has a love for this series and everyone of his threads is enjoyed. Maybe today he can start a couple more threads about the series to inform other collectors about Mr Weinmans Little Ladies. Talking and sharing knowledge about Mercs is enjoyed. Others should chip in also I believe.

BTW Brian, Wayne's Icon coin is a very cool coin. I know the Idiot that sold it.
