A small victory......back from grading today.

DHeathDHeath Posts: 8,472 ✭✭✭
I was lucky enough to run into two almost identical JFK's in a box of sealed 1971 proof sets that had been in a former dealer's safe for some years. I thought it was worth sharing a pic. This coin pictured below has a twin. They both graded PR69 Ucam (the first two at NGC). Sorry for the indoor pics, but I got home after dark. Hope you like them.

Do you think they would have made PCGS 69 DCAM?

Jay, One would cross, and the other would 68 Dcam IMO. The coin I didn't post a pic of has one pinpr*ck planchet flaw between the tail and the left leg on the reverse, that PCGS "might" see as a weakness. They are both solid dcam though, the first I've ever seen without hairlines. I'll post a decent pic of both tomorrow. These were quick pics under a lamp.

Edited to add - Interestingly enough, NGC seems to be tough on this date in UCam. They've only Ucam'd two other 71's, both PR68. They've awarded plenty of cams and a few cam *'s.

DHeath- I'm REALLY excited for you!! Congratulations on a couple of fabulous coins. I'm happy to know you submitted the first 2 coins to make the grade at NGC!

Kind of humorous that a number of months ago, some members were very critical of me when I suggested that there are thousands of unopened shipping boxes of '71 proof sets sitting out there in safes and vaults, just awaiting the revelation of great coins. I'm happy to see you were lucky enough, worked hard enough, to find a couple of those beauties!!!

so, are owners of PF68UCAM coins going to groan and say "ouch"
because their pop xx/0 coins are now xx/2?

Also, DHeath, do you hope no more coins of this caliber "turn up"?
    do you think they will?

Oh, congratulations by the way. I learned in another thread that these are rare in this condition, but very very common and not worth much at all in regular old proof 67 condition.

    Baley,

I don't know, but I sort of hope for collectors that a few do. I've been hunting these guys for so long that I'm just delighted to check them off my list. They've been collected now for 32 years and only 21 have been graded 69 Dcam, and prior to these two there were none at NGC. I paid $17 for the pair, plus 10 years of sweat equity.image These coins aren't at all rare. They're only very hard to find in a condition that compares favorably to the rest of the series. These coins are pretty available in PCGS 68 Dcam. I'm sure I should be excited at the possibility of reaping a huge profit, but that really wasn't why I was so happy to find them. For me it is the challenge. I think that's a very entertaining part of the hobby. There's also a great sense of satisfaction that comes from looking for them, finding them, and recognizing them for what they are. I bought them from a retired coin dealer. To me they were treasure and to him they were junk. This pair will be special to me even if the future proves them worthless, because I've accomplished one of my personal goals. image

Geez, Don, an MS68DCAM 1966 SMS Kennedy wasn't enough? Now you go and make twin 69UCAM 1971-S's? Greedy sucker.

    YOU SUCK HUGE!

    Russ,

I still have two unfulfilled goals in the series, and you're the only one I know who has fulfilled one of them. I'm still after the 65 SMS trophy coin, and an AH like yours. By the time I find them, I'll likely be too blind to recognize them. LOL

I forgot to ask. When do you go on vacation? I'd like to know in advance so I can schedule some time away from eBay to get some sleep. image

Suckaroonie ... way to go, Don. I have been concentrating on '40s-50s proofs lately, time to start mining for the SMS and 1968-1971 coins again. Those are gorgeous! image

    hey Don

good score and glad that your searchings is paying off.

now for the aside to DCAM..................... some members were very critical of me when I suggested that there are thousands of unopened shipping boxes of '71 proof sets sitting out there in safes and vaults, just awaiting the revelation of great coins.

i really don't think that any misconstrued criticism was directed towards the availability of unopened Proof Sets from 1971. if it's any comfort to you in being right on that point, you win.............................nothing. we all KNOW there are many, many sets not yet searched. if you would read threads like this with an open mind and perhaps ask questions of those who engross themselves in these post 1964 Proof coins, you might perhaps learn something. the point you were most likely criticized on, and this is only a guess, is that you seem to believe that this particular date/denomination is sitting en masse somewhere just waiting to be slabbed PR69DCAM/UCAM. such is not the case. i wonder how much you have looked at these sets?? speaking from experience as Don, Russ, Marty and others do, this is a milestone of sorts.
