question from the Darkside re: minting quantities of US coins

I read a little while ago that more US coins have been minted than all the world's coins since the minting of coins began, say about 2500 years ago. Can this really be true? Does someone know how many coins that might be?

With a US population of about 300 million the Mint needs to produce billions of coins just so everybody can have a few.
