<< <i>weird. i thought "ms-63" was supposed to represent the average uncirculated grade for a random sample of unc coins. K S >>
That is what I've heard too! Perhaps you received a better than average roll, or could the "average" grade be MS-64?
Tom
Not necessarily - I'm not surprised one bit that the roll of 1951's didn't have any FBL coins in it - if you find one or two in any given roll you should consider yourself par for the course - more than that is definitely a gravy find. Certain years and mint marks are very hard to locate in FBL, 1951 is one of them.
Karl:
This is indeed a very very good roll. Philadelphia coins from 1948-1955 are usually pretty clean, Apparently this roll was not disturbed and survived in pristine condition. This is rare, but not unheard of. San Francisco rolls for some reason were for the most part very well preserved as well, though hardly any of them contain FBL's either. Denver rolls are notorious for looking like they've been through a grinder. If you found a Denver roll from the 1948-53 era, you would find more FBL's than average, as they were well struck, but they would average AU58-MS62 most likely.

A good friend of mine submitting a roll of 51s coins to Pcgs, out of the whole roll he netted one 51s ms65fbl and a ms64fbl... all others didn't have fbl....

You start out with 20 coins worth $15 a pop.
Get them wrapped with $16+ of plastic each and end up with:
16 coins you are in $31+ each with a value of $15 per
and
4 coins you are also in $31+ each with a value of $60 per
Got quoins?

Ok, were happy for you, congrats... your the man!
Let me clue you in on something..... One can do both and have fun and make a profit......

but it's a Half Roll, as in a Roll of Halves.
An above average roll but no super gems, huh?
spudmasher, what is your objective? profit or fun or both?
Did you achieve them?
