Well, here it is almost October, and it looks like he was pretty much right on the money. The results for the 2003 coins thus far:

Kennedy
Total: 1550
70DCAM: 17 (1.09%)

State Quarters
Total: 19,032
70DCAM: 301 (1.58%)

Roosevelt
Total: 1464
70DCAM: 70 (4.78%)

Jefferson
Total: 1430
70DCAM: 23 (1.6%)

Lincoln
Total: 1379
70DCAM: 10 (.73%)

Note: For simplification, I lumped the silvers and clads together.

Looks like they've hit the quotas pretty well.

So what about all the years when 70s weren't being made... I seem to remember him finding that unusual and needing to talk to the graders about giving the coin the 70 it deserved if it met the criteria. It's good that they give the coin the grade it merits, but it is surprising that it would take a Q&A from last fall to get the ball rolling.

I don't have earlier pop reports for any series except Kennedys. But with those new submissions are producing 70DCAMs in the same percentage range for coins from about the mid '80's forward. There are a handful of exceptions in there (the '01 clad for example) that seem to be tougher years.

That aside, I'm less concerned about the years where they weren't making them than I am about the period before that when they holdered a very high percentage that did not deserve the designation. There is a lot of junk from that period residing in 70DCAM holders.

It should be noted that David Hall was not running PCGS during the period that they choked off the supply of 70DCAMs. Rick Montgomery was.

where'd he say that? i thought it was "70's" period would make up basically 1%. does that mean quite a higher % should be 70's then???

There should be as many 70's as coins that meet the criteria for 70. If the mint has a good year and makes 50% "perfect" coins they should be graded as such.

No, Karl, it was only 70DCAMs. He did not say the same thing about circulation strikes.

  • so one can conclude from past and present grading results that getting a pr70 grade is mere politics and whos running the ship at any given time..rather than if a coin merits the grade or any clearly defined consistent standards..and the whole thing is subjective at best and that yesterdays pr69 may be todays pr70..gee i think i'll buy me some pr70s hahahahahaha
