question from the Darkside re: minting quantities of US coins

I read a little while ago that more US coins have been minted than all the world's coins since the minting of coins began, say about 2500 years ago. Can this really be true? Does someone know how many coins that might be?

I don't have exact numbers, but I wouldn't doubt it.

I doubt it, although at current rates it may soon reach that. But it's not possible to calculate all the roman imperial coinage numbers. Especially when you factor a mintage run from around 400 BC to the fall of Byzantium in all territories and vassal states...

  • With a US population of about 300 million the Mint needs to produce billions of coins just so everybody can have a few.

  • Makes you wonder why some more common pieces are so expensive. Canadians look attractive at that point!

Lincoln cents alone probably account for nearly half of all coins ever
minted, and the lion's share of these are the memorial type.
