Someone foolish enough not to even look at a coin because of the holder it's in doesn't seem like much of a collector to me. On the other hand, scrutinizing a coin closely for problems because of the holder it's in seems prudent.

You can buy a great coin for the wrong price and get a bad deal.... you can buy the wrong coin for a great price and get a good deal. But buying the right coin for the right price is an even better deal and those coins don't much care what holder they are in!

They aren't, but they're sure as hell better than the Mariners.
The thing that baffles me about the Mariners is they're actually a very good team, but they always choke! Whether it's in the playoffs or just before the playoffs, they always choke. What the hell? image Wouldn't it be great to see them win it all one year? As if that will ever happen! image

It probably couldn't make it into a PCGS slab because of some problem. That is why it was in a NGC slab.

Perhaps these coins have a problem. they are NGC.

FOM, I dont mind people have different opinions on this board. Most will tell you that I dont get too involved in the reindeer games that sometimes go around these threads, but remember that what you post around here is read by many people and many YN's that are just starting out. They need to be taught what is really correct in numismatics. If you feel more comfortable buying PCGS slabbed coins, then do so, but dont say that NGC coins have problems, or raw coins for that matter. For many newbies, that is cheating them of many experiences in the instance that they listen to your ignorant drivel. A coin is a coin. It is not the plastic.

Maybe if you prefaced your words with IMO or even IMHO, blah blah blah....
then people wouldnt get so upset.

And you wouldnt be insulting so many people that collect all different coins, PCGS, NGC and heaven forbid.... RAW.

Oh, and BTW, I will put just my NGC collection up for scrutiny any day of the week against yours and we can see whos everyone would want.

Yep, they are masters at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. They're also pretty good at snatching large sums of money from taxpayer wallets and purses.

TDN - You have nailed it once again! image- all I can add is "Buy the coin, not the plastic".

  • This topic has really stirred everyone up! I had no idea it would go this far. What I am getting from all of these posts is to buy the coin and not the holder. However, a coin slabbed by PCGS or NGC does give the buyer some degree of assurance, although not perfect. PCGS slabs definitely sell at a premium compared to all of the competition, but the buyer should not assume that just because a coin is in a PCGS holder that it is somehow superior to one in a different holder with the same grade. A lot of what PCGS and NGC do is very positive, and both companies should be commended for helping to promote the hobby. image

And one more for you too. But is this PCGS or NGC????????? Can you tell? Pretty good pic of the coin.
Ok, you got me, you can see the plastic...

How do you know the first four I posted were NGC?; What is wrong with them? Grade them and let me know.

    OR ,

    MAYBE,

YOU can post some of YOURS, FOM. Then we can see what a real coin looks like, a properly graded coin that is reallly worth the dinero that you paid....

Dollardude has pretty much got it, which is what I want for all new members/collectors. I dont know if dd is a new collector or not.

The only thing that isnt necessarily true is that PCGS coins sell for a premium...

Here is one example straight out of the bluesheet. Sight unseen pricing guide for PCGS/NGC coins for 1878 8 Tail feathers.

Here is what they have. This is the first one I picked out.

    PCGS-MS61=95/MS62=98/MS63=110/MS63DMPL=272/MS64=224/MS64DMPL=900/MS65=900/MS65DMPL=4175/MS66=5750/MS67=20000
    NGC- MS61=95/MS62=98/MS63=110/MS63DMPL=272/MS64=220/MS64DMPL=850/MS65=900/MS65DMPL=3680/MS66=6600/MS67=20000

    Russ,

Pacific.... Right off the Monterey Peninsula.

I'll be the one crying as I have "throwers remorse" image
  • I'm glad to see that people can actually learn something here.
IMO, Dollardude came to the right conclusion.
Oh, coinlieutenant when I clicked on the 1870 Quarter I was hoping to see a CC on the reverseimage

    Elmwood,
    LMAO!

In my dreams!!! Plus, if it were in an NGC holder, it would be a problem coin anyway image
Glad you liked the coin. Worked for about three hours trying to image that puppy yesterday.
    Thanks for the compliment

I'm still waiting for a response from FOM or even WSM...
    Bueller?... Anyone?

Yes, virtually worthless. You could probably get 3X face for it.

NO, Definately NOT - Throw it in Lake Michigan - (PM me and I'll give you a specifc location) That ocean salt water is VERY detrimental to the surfaces of your delicate beauty, but the cool clean waters of Lake Michigan will protect it - especially if you follow my exact directions as to where it should be thrown. image

    New,

    You in Chicago?

    I'm from Illinois originally...

  • Coinlieutenant, I started collecting coins in 1991, and graduated to slabbed coins in around 2000.

I didn't realize PCGS was, in some cases, priced less than NGC per the greysheet. I stand corrected.

Check out my latest win at 1934-S Peace Dollar, PCGS, XF45, NR. This is the key date in the Peace series between the grades of XF45 and MS64 (not the key date in very low or very high grades -- go figure). I think the price would have been about the same in an NGC holder on this one. I'm getting tired and going to bed.

Let's see if I can post a pic...

    DD,

All the above being said, the trend is that PCGS gets higher bids than NGC. Just not always on the bluesheet....PCGS usually has higher bluesheet bids but there are alot that go the other ways.

Nice peace dollar. They are hard to find with eye appeal...

  • Going back to my baseball analogy, I have to be jealous of every team in MLB as my local team is the Detroit Tigers!! Also unfortunately guilty by association to the Detroit Lions. Good things the Pistons are rebuilding a strong team and the Red Wings have been pretty powerful for the last decade. And what the hell, the WNBA Detroit Shock just won the championship!!

I can think of a dozen reasons not to have high capacity magazines, but it's the reasons I haven't thought about that I need them.

i didn't read any of the thread other than the title & your opening post. i think if your decision making process on whether or not to buy a coin is getting all hung up on what kind of plastic a coin is in - your not a coin collector. you should get a different hobby - 1 you can enjoy

<< <i>Maybe because there are more NGC 70s! Doesnt take a Rocket Scientist to figure that one out! >>

    WSM,

Really? Let's do a little comparison in Kennedy Halves for PR70:

    1978-S
    PCGS - 58
    NGC - 0

    1979-S Ty1
    PCGS - 66
    NGC - 6

    1979-S Ty2
    PCGS - 39
    NGC - 0

    1980-S
    PCGS - 51
    NGC - 4

    1981-S Ty1
    PCGS - 63
    NGC - 0

    1981-S Ty2
    PCGS - 24
    NGC - 0

    1982-S
    PCGS - 70
    NGC - 2

    1983-S
    PCGS - 128
    NGC - 2

    1984-S
    PCGS - 66
    NGC - 0

    1985-S
    PCGS - 54
    NGC - 1

I could go on and on, but I'm tired of typing. Oh, and my apologies for confusing you with facts.

    A very telling story.
