  • It will get a MS66RD at most
    Most likely a MS65RD

Carbon spots kill. There is no cure, there is nothing you can do about them, and they damage the coin. Same as cancer.

  • On a relatively modern coin I'd say its absolutely something you don't want and its a serious negative.

On a 19th or even 18th century coin with some original red a carbon spot doesn't both me at all. In fact I think its an indication that the coin is probably original, as someone dipping or doctoring a coin to make it appear red would not leave a carbon spot behind.

I know it hurts and future collectors may think we're crazy for it, but usually coins
like this just get spent. If it's just a very tiny spot I'll sometimes stabilize it in acetone
and go ahead ands save it. A lot of the cents in mint sets from this era are starting
to spot. It's usually not a particular problem with the '74 but it's seen more and more
each year. Roll coins seem to have more problems with the overall surface and less
    problem with the carbon spots.

  • I've always thought of copper collectors as the fussiest (rightly so) of all collectors. So, my thought is that it would be a tough sell in any grade. I really wonder if NCS would screw it up?

  • I got a question. I submitted a 1957D Lincoln Cent with spots on it to PCGS. The coin is extremely shiny. It got a MS66RD grade. If water spots are dark, and carbon spots are dark, where do you draw the line??

I don't recall seeing a water spot that was as dark as a carbon spot, but if it is, then it's treated as a carbon spot. Most water spots are faint and will not preclude a coin from being graded MS67RD if it isn't in a focal area.

Regarding the 74-D, it won't grade 67RD. Sorry pow012000. I know your pain.

  • I thought water spots are usually white-ish or even opaque at certain angles. How does a small water spot affect the grade on a coin , if at all? Also, are water stains mint made or a tell tale sign the coin has been rinsed or dipped?
  • If they are not water spots, the 57D has about 14 carbon spots on it!! image

Dont buy copper with spots of carbon. You will lose in the long run.

Since it looks like its a inexpensive date, select another.

Carbon spots are jet black, though sometimes will be briefly lighter colored
    as they are developing.
