On a 19th or even 18th century coin with some original red a carbon spot doesn't both me at all. In fact I think its an indication that the coin is probably original, as someone dipping or doctoring a coin to make it appear red would not leave a carbon spot behind.
like this just get spent. If it's just a very tiny spot I'll sometimes stabilize it in acetone
and go ahead ands save it. A lot of the cents in mint sets from this era are starting
to spot. It's usually not a particular problem with the '74 but it's seen more and more
each year. Roll coins seem to have more problems with the overall surface and less
problem with the carbon spots.
Regarding the 74-D, it won't grade 67RD. Sorry pow012000. I know your pain.
Since it looks like its a inexpensive date, select another.
