Type 2 Cents

Perhaps some here will remember me. I have not visited here in a long time, but I used to be a very frequent poster.

I am curious if someone could give me a brief rundown on the status of Type 2 Cents. 1998 and 2000 seem to be the easiest dates. Can someone give me the lowdown on what dates have been confirmed so far, and the prices these are going for? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Welcome back.

The Type 2s have been discovered for 1998, 1999 and 2000. I think someone said there have been 1997s and 2001s found. However, a new twist, or at least new to me, is that a 1992-D (I think D) has the close AM reverse. Someone on eBay recently was asking $1,000 for a piece. I thought it was a false statement, but when I looked in the new 2004 redbook, it was listed (but no price).

I will post again in a few minutes with PCGS pops for the 1998, 1999 and 2000 cents.

I have been looking at all of my 2003s and wondering if any type 2s have been found? Any news on '03s?
    I collect circulated U.S. silver

I have not heard of any 2002 or 2003 cents being found with the type 2 reverse.
  • That 1992-D that Rampage mentioned did sell for $1,000 on Ebay, I had it on my watch list. I've found several 1998's and 2000's but no 1999 Type 2 reverses yet.

    Commoncents.

I am amazed that the 1992 coin sold for a grand. Makes me want to check all my cents all over again to look for 1992s....image

I am going to try to look up the auction and post a link for everyone to see.

    Richard.

Commoncents.....out of curiosity, were you the seller or buyer? You do not have to answer if you do not want to, just asking.

    Thanks. Richard.

Nope, was not you, but I do see it was a board member who bought it. I would love to see a better picture of it......a link to the auction is below.

  • Thanks for the help. A few questions:

    1. What speculation has there been about how the 1992-D could have been made? If I remember right, the error comes from dies that are made in Philadelphia and shipped to San Francisco that somehow got mixed up -- correct? Denver makes its own reverse dies -- right? How then could this 1992-D have happened?

    2. What are the going prices for unslabbed coins?

I bought an unslabbed 2000 from someone here quite awhile back. I forget who it was and what I paid.

  • Mark,

To partially answer your question #1, Denver's die shop didn't open until the summer of 1996. image

The 2000 Type 2 cents can be bought off eBay for about $10.00, plus or minus a buck or two.

The 1998 Type 2 cents do not come up as often, but I think can be had for $15.00, plus or minus a buck or two.

The 1999 Type 2 cents hardly ever come up. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe that the last raw one that was on eBay went for like $238.00. There was recently an MS66 PCGS coin that was offered at $549 or $599. No takers at either price. The PCGS coin was offered by one of the forum members.

I thought that could be a possibility. Thanks.

So, what took you so long to start posting in the forums again? image

Yep, I admit I bought the 92d Close AM. Here's what I know about it. It is the 1993 reverse die that was shipped early to Denver and used by mistake. The error is only recently discovered by a cherrypicker on the left coast. After much research and conversations about the coin I had to have it! I know of only 4 discovered. Ken Potter, who writes for Coin World tells me he knows of 6, maybe 7. That includes the 4 confirmed by myself. I am going to send it to NGC this week for verification and attribution. It should be the only one ever slabbed to my knowledge. I thought about petitioning PCGS to attribute it but I was involved with the Wide AM push which took over 6 months. So I spoke to NGC on Thursday and they will do it. Not sure whether it will be called Type 2 or Close AM at this point. It is the rarest modern Lincoln error at this point to my knowledge. I figured the auction would spark some serious interst. The seller had over 1000 unique viewers of the auction. He also had NUMEROUS offers for trades, but he needed the cash. I am surprised it took you guys this long to post about it! And I'm surprised it didn't sell for alot more!!

I also was the seller for the 99 Wide AM PCGS MS66 which did not sell. I started the auction based on a previous private sale in August. I sold a MS66 to one of the Registry Lincoln collectors in the top ten. I realize the price is steep but the pop's on the 99 Wide AM's have stayed extremely low, as is the case with NGC also. It is a very rare coin, no bones about it. I have been debating listing one of my 99 Wide AM's in PCGS MS67 but just can't "pull the trigger" at this point. There is nothing out there that interests me at this point, besides the 92d. I am in the process of building a 1959- present Lincoln Registry set so may eventually trade one? But I highly recommend acquiring a BU 99 if you can find one. I think it is going to stand the test of time and remain a modern rarity. Just my opinion but I have almost a year of research and 100's of conversations leading me to my conclusion. image

My SONY 1.6 Megapix. camera can't take pics that small and detailed. I will borrow one this week and post, if I can figure it out!

Wow the 1999 type II is that rare. I just checked NGCs pop 3 in MS66 RED and 1 in MS67 RED.

I have an NGC MS66 RED that I found and made myself. image

Anyone got POP reports for the 1999 Type II for the other Slabbers like ANACS and ICG?

    Bill,

Who would send a rare penny to ICG? Do they have a pop report? Never heard of it if they do. I can't believe noone else has any input on the 92d penny issue. Guess I was at least expecting a modern basher flame about paying that much for a coin still available in pocket change, or so they believe!!image

I think more 92D Close AMs will show up, eventually. My opinion is that it may turn out like the 95DDO when it was first discovered. People spent 2 to 3 hundred dollars for one and now they can be had for 25 bucks, raw. Not saying that will be the case with the 92D, just a feeling though.
  • cosmicdebriscosmicdebris Posts: 12,332 ✭✭✭
I know when these first came out ICG was the first to start slabbing the Type IIs so who knows?

As for the 92 there has got to be at least a few more out there.
