No one collecting '70-75 football?

I was really surprised by the lack of bids for some of the early 70's PSA 8 and 9 football I had close tonight. Some of the very low pop commons (1 of 2, 1 of 3, 1 of 4) went for $11-13 each in PSA 9. Some very nice stars in 8 for $10-20 each. From reading threads here & hearing folks talk at shows, I thought early 70s football was one of the faster growing segments of the registry right now. Apparently that's not yet the case. Some great bargains were had if those sets do eventually take off.

Ripken - 1960's and 1950's and earlier football sets remain solid,
but the 1970's sets, other than 1972, really haven't taken off yet on the registry.
Maybe later on down the road ...

Its very hit and miss. I sold some 70's a while back with some 8's bringing 8-12 and
a few 1-2 9's brought 50 bucks or so. Steelers have done real well in the past.
I agree with Wolf someday they will take off?
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs
Nothing on ebay
Send in your Steelers, your Raiders, any HOF'ers and RC's and I think you will get good returns. The commons just arent worth the cost of the slab at this point.

according to my values and my needs. Nothing holds dominion over me, I stand alone as the ruler of my life.
p.s. i tried to get a couple bids in but i read your earlier thread too late and missed the auction endings.

I recently started the 1970 set, but I would never do a 72 or later set because of the size. 70 and 71 are still manageable at under 300 cards.
I'll try to watch more closely.

Fuzz - you DID manage to find all the 1967 PSA 9's with no problem last night ...

It seems like the Wolves here telling on the sheep. I got out bid on the 67 #1 (at over $500, but it is not coming to my house) as well as another one. And on the 66's, the Skinsfan seems to collect just a bit more than the Skin's. In fact, isn't that 66 set an AFl only set.
You two guys have put a tremendous amount of fun in competing in the 60's FB sets on the registry. But neither of you has made it easy or cheap to even just finish a lowly second. In fact, if I recall, you both won at least as many sets as I did last year and probably more. It could be the same again this year. But next year..............
If you fear the Fuzz, seek counseling.

PS. I added on to my 63 Fleer set that just posted last week. It should update by Monday. Now that one is starting to look a little better.
If I were a collector, I would do the 1970 FB Set. Just the right combo of price and availablity.
Could be done in 8 or 9, maybe one of each!

None taken. I can also say that you have cost me a few $$ as well and more importantly to me, cost me some nice cards. But no problem. I have been picking up some of the later 70's 9's and 10's lately to start picking at those sets to see where it goes. Have not committed to building the sets yet. That is a lot of cards to have to focus on and keep track of. I am sure they are not the price the were and as you can see from earlier posts on this thread, some feel that I may be a touch aggressive on cards that I want. The good news for you on those is that I will be fading in and out on those over the next few weeks to months as other projects and commitments hit. So hopefully you will be able to add some cards to the stack.
I think the bargains here really relate to the later 70's as the early 70's stuff is not cheap but definately better than the later 60's stuff. I have seen PSA 9's go for $6 and many less than $10. When you get nice cards at around the cost of the slab, it seems pretty attractive.

<< <i> finally, i don't know what was worse in that decade the aesthetic appeal of the cards or the music. >>
Geez, I think the 1970's was without a doubt the best music era ever, from the crazy drug music all the way through the disco era. The card designs were hit and miss but there are some great looking sets from the 1970's. 1975 Topps Baseball is the best looking set ever, IMO.

It's not often that people get their own anti-fan club but I am honored. I was born to be the bad guy at the wrestling matches, so for me................... this was destiny.
But really, you guys must have a low fear factor. Afraid of a 40's something, unemployed, over weight, high school drop out who drives a used car (which over heated yesterday and caused all kinds of comotion) ? All is true (very misleading but true).
I have nothing against the Skins or Skins fans. They have some of the best cheerleaders in league and their is a lot to be said for that. In addition, I do despise the Cardinals and the Cowboys, so the Skins are on the better side of the coin.
Besides, you guys haven't met my wife......... then you would really be afraid.

PS. Jeremy, Looked at a few of your auctions before I was interupted last night. Your BIN's weren't reasonable. They were down right cheap and I ended every auction I looked at.
I do believe that the economics of these sets, in relative value to earlier sets, will skyrocket in popularity within the next year. This will be driven by a segment of collectors that are more concerned with a certificate and winning than of actually what they collect. Much to the disappoint of many on this board, I believe this is a reasonably populous segment and let's face facts, within a few years, most of the sets will have established leaders that will be very difficult to dethrone.
Take 64 Philly for example. Evanov has the #1 set. And a heck of set it is ! 100% at 8.60 +. So if you had even a great set (at 100% at 8.20) then there would be a big wall to climb next year. You would need about 80 upgrades to catch up. With an average difference between an 8 and a 9 of $100 this would be an $8K anchor for next years race. This doesn't even count the fact that 8.6 will get better and better and the real cost of catching up might easily be $15K.
So, you can invest you $8K, sweat and tears to probably finish second again or. if you were driven to win, look somewhere else. Needing on 50% to qualify and with limited competition for many of the cards today, you could start some late 70's or early 80's sets. Even at $15/ card for PSA 9's (which is higher than the market is currently at by a lot) you could more than 530 PSA 9 cards. Spread that among 2 sets and you could qualify with 50%+ and 9.0 on two sets ! You could focus on one and be nearly 100% at 9.0 on one set.
Not saying that it is right or wrong but for collectors who are currently driven by winning instead of enjoying, this may be one of the last main stream areas left where winning could be accomplished on a moderate budget. I think as these people emerge and start to focus on this area, prices will bump up and these registry will fill in with these sets.
Just my nickels worth cuase it was a lot longer than two cents buys.

This is a good example of what can be done, and how it should be done.
That is an awesome set - I've had the honor of contributing to the cause a couple of times.
But because Frank has been so focused and not shy about getting the best - him investment will pay off in the end. Not to mention, it may always be the best 1964 Philly set around.
There have been, and will continue to be a few people building 70s FB sets behind the curtains - it does them a disservice to register them early. Thanks for you BINs Fuzz - and thank you too Abe.
There are still some 77, 79 & 80s left. May all your snipes go though!
